Probably related to the Navy Yard shooting across the Potomac...but maybe something else going on?

Perhaps they suspect the shooter has a Benghazi import on his person.

Police closed the 11th St Bridge as well as M St SE between 2nd and 4th streets SE due to the shooting. Entrances to the Navy Yard Metro station remain open.

U.S. Capitol Police confirmed enhanced security at the Capitol, but no immediate threat.

Reports began circulating around 9:30 a.m. that the suspect was “down,” but D.C. police said the suspect is still on the loose and “hiding between floors.”

http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/AirportLookup.jsp?q=DCA&go=1

Due to OTHER / SECURITY, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington, DC (DCA).

General Departure Delays: Because a traffic management program is delaying some arriving flights, departing flight schedules may be affected.

General Arrival Delays: Arrival traffic is experiencing airborne delays of 15 minutes or less.

Because of the Navy Yard, even though it’s clear across a very busy town.

Interesting. The popup box says “ground stop”, but if you click for more info, it says nothing about a “ground stop”.

Navy Yard is in Washington, D.C., across the Potomac River from Reagan National Airport. Reagan National is next to southern Arlington, Virginia near the border with Alexandria.

I guess you’re right, as the crow flies. But logistically it’s quite a ride or row to get between.

Live activity Washington D.C. police, fire, EMS:

http://www.broadcastify.com/
http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/2455/web

Lots of activity as of 10:00 AM eastern time.

The first responders have called in their “mass casualty group” of responders. This does NOT mean there are mass casualties.

WTOP-FM reports via Twitter

UPDATE: Ground stop at Reagan National Airport is for departures http://bit.ly/1eUGWul.

MSNBC reports says reason for Reagan shut down is because of helicopter traffic for Navy Yard shooting.

I seriously doubt it. A little pop gun couldn’t reach where the planes have to go. Maybe if he had a RPG.

The flight path doesn’t take planes over the Navy Yard, the problem is the subway stop at the Navy yard makes the airport only a few minutes away.

An airport in NYC closed as well?

No. NYC airports are experiencing departure delays for planes bound to Washington Reagan, for obvious reasons:

Due to OTHER / SECURITY, departure traffic destined to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Washington, DC (DCA) will not be allowed to depart until at or after 10:30 am EDT.

The same message is displayed for all the airports in the area. It hasn't spread to the entire country (i.e. DFW, MSP) yet.

I don’t count medium caliber rifles as pop guns when firing at a commercial plane less than 1000 AGL doing around 200 kts as planes do when in an extended pattern.

All NYC airports report it, if you click on the details. You can see the same message as far away as Orlando:

I think you’re right about it being helo related. FBI HRT is at Quantico and there are military reaction units at Davidson Airfield at Ft Belvoir. Both would approach the Navy Yard going upriver past Reagan National. They probably want to keep the airspace clear.

It would make sense that all incoming flights from any airport to Reagan would be grounded since the airport is locked down, so to speak.

Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA) is not next to southern Arlington, Virginia. It is in southern Arlington County, Virginia. All land on the far side of the Potomac River ceded by the Commonwealth of Virginia to the federal government in 1791 to be part of the 100 square mile District of Columbia was retroceded to Virginia in 1847.

Any mere individual firearm of traditional basic kind of round is a pop gun compared to RPGs and other true guns expressly meant as a group as MIL armament. And with the distance from airport and angles of runways, I doubt any mere hand-gun could do any damage or even hit.

Already heard it’s because of the traffic of helicopters for the incident.
