Julie Burchill writes on retribution as a feminist issue - and the ceaseless attacks on women
On hearing that India had passed the death penalty on four men convicted of the rape and murder of a student in Delhi last December, I must confess that my first reaction was, Ooh will it be televised?
The father of the victim said: We are very happy. Justice has been delivered. And I completely concur.
Unlike most feminists, I have long been a supporter of the death penalty for any type of killing but the most self-defensive kind, for the simple fact that the more woman-murdering scum are forced to meet their maker, the better.
Retribution is a feminist issue, and execution sod pole-dancing or cupcake-baking would be a truly empowering thing for women worldwide who increasingly feel that there is some sort of undeclared global jihad against them merely by virtue of the gender they are born into.
If a racial or religious minority faced the same scale of ceaseless attacks that females do, wed call it terrorism, persecution, genocide. As it is, we seem to see it as the luck of the draw. Draw the X chromosome, and your life will be one of X-rated horror good luck, little girl!
When I think of the lives of women in the 21st Century, I think of a horrible parody of Shakespeares Seven Ages Of Man. First she is an aborted female foetus, then a cyber-bullied schoolgirl, then a groomed, raped and trafficked victim of some low-life gang, then a judged predatory Lolita responsible for her own molestation by some dirty old man. And thats just before shes old enough to vote.
In young adult life, at the height of her beauty, she will be groped, grabbed and molested in the street as she goes about her daily business.
Seeking refuge from this, she may put herself under the protection of one man through marriage or co-habitation only to find that one in four British women, for example, will be victims of domestic violence, and that two women a week are killed by partners or ex-partners. (Someone needs to tell a LOT of men that Till death us do part doesnt mean Till I want you dead.)
When she loses her beauty, she will become a despised battle-axe butt of a million mother-in-law jokes and disappear from the television and cinema screens, while her male contemporaries grow more visible and earn more with every decade of decay.
Finally, she will be an unwanted old woman dying for a drink of water on an NHS hospital ward. Rest in peace, indeed.
Of course, this is not a black and white situation. The majority of men do not hate, harass or kill women. Girls bully other girls. And of course men suffer from molestation as children, violence as teenagers and murder as men. I dont believe that your average working-class boy will have an effortless glide through life to a round of applause.
But there is something relentless about the level of abuse females suffer... a low-level white noise of nastiness which can flare up at the slightest perceived provocation a word which, interestingly, can cover everything from a woman being attractive to a man to a woman getting what she deserved in the context of marital murder. Its not black and white but the reason we are so prepared to see violence against women as somehow less serious than racist or homophobic violence does indicate that repeated exposure to domestics has turned our moral compass a grubby shade of grey.
Speaking of which, that womens victimisation can be dressed up and sold to millions of them as exciting erotica is just the cherry on the throat-choking cake we have served up to us as 50 sorts of normality every day.
Yes, suicide is the biggest killer of men under 35 but suicide rates famously decline when people are under attack, which may well explain why women do it less.
The way that the woman who convinced the Bank of England earlier this year that Jane Austen that notorious man-hating virago! might appear on banknotes was inundated with threats of rape and murder (50 an hour for 24 hours) shows the level of hysterical hatred of women that can exist in the most apparently ordinary of men.
If this level of loathing was directed at a race or religion, the police would be kicking their doors in.
But sexism has always been the poor relation of racism even though it kills many more people.
Thats why its so refreshing that India has finally responded to the torrent of gynocide taking place there a rape reported every 20 minutes, according to statistics, which probably means that the real statistic is far higher with serious retaliation against males who will persist in picking on people weaker than them.
Surrounded by medieval-mentality countries in the grip of a religion whose attitude towards women is somewhere between that of apartheid towards blacks and of Scrooge towards money Islamism, the extreme incarnation of which believes that schoolgirls deserve to be shot for wanting an education or that rape victims deserve to be flogged India has always been a beacon of democracy and progress in the region.
These executions if they take place will do nothing to contradict this.
Its a shame to say, but women can be their own worst enemies. Victims of racial hatred and homophobic violence are happy to see their attackers face the full force of the law.
But women, too often, having been raised to forgive and forget all trespasses against them in pursuit of a quiet life, will often drop cases against men who have attacked them especially if they know them.
We need the judicial system to come down hard on these lowest of law-breakers.
But we have to help ourselves. Stop turning the other cheek. Stop taking that bullying boyfriend back.
Report that violent husband to the police. Stop thinking that a man who has hurt you saying sorry makes it better.
Help send the proudly named Rapeman who tweets you to jail and see how he likes having his fantasy made flesh in the prison showers, with the roles reversed.
Take the gloves off. Get angry. What the hell hang em high!
The general opinion is that the 5th member of the rape gang, the juvenile (who was also reportedly the most brutal) faces a similar (if unofficial) fate. He couldn’t be tried as an adult, and received only a 3-year stay in juvenile incarceration. However, I have heard that once he is released, he will almost certainly face a vigilante killing, and will die the same way the girl he raped died (massive internal injuries as a result of being sodomized with a length of rebar).
I barf at feminists. They make it impossible to even agree with them on the few things you can agree with them on.
Everything is through a I hate men prism.
You don’t get men on board with you when you start from a foundation that all men suck. Just a heads-up. Women do awful things to those that are weaker than them. That is human nature in a fallen world. to say things would be different if women were the stronger ones or the ones “in charge” is laughable.
I loved Margaret Thatcher for having guts and more balls than most of the brit men over there. Don’t tell me the world would be different. We LOOK different and we use different tactics because you do that when you have physical differences and you’re the weaker one. That doesn’t mean you don’t abuse and do bad things to those that are weaker than YOU. Nuns beating the crap out of smaller kids, today that behavior would be labeled severa child abuse. Let’s not forget the mental and emotional abuse that we’ve all experienced at the hands of women.
Feminists deny reality and have built an industry around the kiddie rhyme of girls being sugar and spice and everything nice and well, boys just suck all around and can’t wait to rape and abuse you sometime in the future.
Good grief! Julie is so relentlessly fanatical for the cause of feminism, I lost the point of relief and celebration for India bringing the death penalty for murder by rape.
Agree! I lost a lot of compassion for her when her screed went vitriolic (and stratospheric!).
I understand her feelings, as a husband and father of a 17 YO girl. But, jeez! She's lucky she didn't live in medieval times.
I am amazed that she admits the first violence toward females is in the womb. I wonder if she thinks it's also violence when a little boy is killed in the womb, or is that just "women exercising their rights."
