Kerry: threat of US force against Syria 'remains real'

JERUSALEM — The threat of US military action against Syria remains "real", Washington's top diplomat said on Sunday a day after striking a deal with Russia to destroy Damascus's chemical weapons stockpile.

"The threat of force remains, the threat is real," US Secretary of State John Kerry said at a news conference in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"We cannot have hollow words in the conduct of international affairs."

Kerry's remarks were made following a four-hour meeting with Netanyahu at which the two men discussed the US-Russian agreement on eradicating Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons, and also talked about the ongoing Middle East peace talks.

"Make no mistake, we have taken no options off the table," Kerry warned after news of the deal appeared to stave off the threat of a US-led military strike on the Syrian regime after a chemical attack last month on a Damascus suburb.

"The fact of weapons of mass destruction having being used against the people of their own state -- these are crimes against humanity and they cannot be tolerated," he said.

Under terms of the breakthrough deal struck in Geneva on Saturday following three days of talks between Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, the regime of President Bashar al-Assad has a week to hand over details of the quantity and location of all the chemical agents in its possession.

The stockpile would then be turned over to international supervision and destroyed by mid-2014 in a deal which has won backing from China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The accord was hailed as heading off a possible US-led strike and unspecified sanctions.

Kerry described the Geneva understandings as a "framework, not a final agreement", but one which had "the full ability to be able to strip...

"John F'n Kerry the warmonger. "

Joan Karie sure talks a tough game... but wait! Isn't this the same coward that betrayed his fellow military comrades in Paris?

Is not this the same Joan Karie that his fellow Swift Boat fellows testified about running from a fight (was that Viet Nam or Cambodia, or Laos sometime around Christmas???)...

That Joan Karie???

We have to bomb Syria now, so we do not have to bomb Syria in the future. Our diplomacy must be taken seriously. That is what passes for wisdom in DC.

Nobody outside the acute mentally impaired believe Lurch. Putin’s KGB files on Lurch and Barry are extensive and complete. They never had a chance.

All those accords are a ridiculous charade. Putin jaque mate Obama and Kerry thanks Putin. We are in a Kafka world. Obama supports the role of Putin in the Syrian civil war; Russia will keep Assad in power and maintain supplying him with unlimited conventional weapons while U.S. agreed that they will no attack Syria under any circumstances, even though the accord for the disposal of the chemical weapons is a charade and complete embarrassment for the prestige of the United States’ role as first world power.

Many of those who support Obama’s involvement on the Syrian civil war are the same people who were opposed to the Iraq war, even though Syria is not a menace to the U.S. and it is a civil war among Muslims in which one faction is as evil as the other.

To further their agenda those who want to involve U.S. in another Middle Eastern war are using as an emotional argument that Assad killed with chemical weapons over 1,400 civilians, most of them children according to the pictures. (According to the French intelligence, the dead were about 300 and the French leftist organization working in Syria, “Physicians without Frontiers”, put the dead count over 400.)

The problem is that the picture they are using was posted by the BBC and they had to retire it when the photographer who took the photo saw it on the BBC web site, it was taken on Iraq in 2003 when Saddam Hussein murdered with chemicals weapons more than 5,000 Kurds in a single day!

Even though BBC retired the picture, the fake photo was edited and all TV news programs keep posting it as proof of the horrendous crimes against humanity committed by the butcher of Bagdad. Obama, and those supporting the involvement of U.S. on Syria’s civil war on humanitarian grounds, prefer to ignore that they kept silent when Assad last year used chemicals weapons in Syria and when he murdered with conventional weapons more than 100,000 of his own people.

It is unconscionably that Obama had not shown the same humanitarian concern for the lives of the Christians. “Every five minutes, somewhere in the Muslim world, a Christian is being killed just for being a Christian”. Since Obama took power, more than one million Christians have been massacred all around Africa and their churches set on fire by Muslims while Obama, the United Nations, and the rest of the world, kept a thundered silence.

This whole ‘Syria thing’ reminds me of the video of the police firearms safety officer shooting himself in the leg with a pistol, then playing it off and picking up an AK-47.
