A Riverview man reported being robbed of his cell phone at knifepoint, but then kept using the device, deputies said.
Deputies said Kyle T. Gallagher, 26, called law enforcement on Aug. 28 to report that he had been robbed at knife point. He told deputies that the suspect, who he described as a black man, had taken his cell phone, Florida driver's license, cash and his green dot debit card.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, detectives began looking at his phone records as part of their investigation, and the call logs and text messages led them to conclude that Gallagher was using his "stolen" cell phone during and after the time he reported that he had been robbed.
Detectives then tried to contact Gallagher about the calls and texts, but he refused to cooperate with investigators, officials said.
On Wednesday, detectives saw Gallagher at a bus stop and tried to speak with him, but he again refused to cooperate and would not provide detectives with a "reasonable explanation" of his phone records, officials said.
Gallagher was arrested for filing a false report to law enforcement. After he was arrested, detectives said they found the Florida driver's license he had reported stolen in his possession.
Gallagher was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail without incident.
Or, he is one sick puppy.
