The number of sexual assaults reported to the US Navy rose dramatically over the last year, officials have said.

The Navy puts the rise down to sailors' growing comfort reporting incidents of sexual assault and to their belief that authorities will take action.

The Navy says about 1,100 assaults were reported in the year ending this month, an increase of 50% from 726 last year.

Back in the 90s I was in charge of parts for my division. I would have to go to the submarine tender once a week or so. You took your career in your hands every time you set foot on a ship full of women. Don't smile at anything, put on a blank face, and don't say anything that wasn't straight out of the regulations.

I can't imagine what it is like know.

I'd love for the Navy to publish the stats on how many women successfully complete their first enlistment.

So many senior officers both retired and active foresaw this happening that it is almost criminal that “leadership” allowed women in the armed services. I disagree; sailors aren't more comfortable with reporting incidents, the military is lacking leadership at the higher levels, and it is now manifesting itself at lower levels in the form of bad conduct Also, the moral standards that used to be upheld by society in general, and the in the military in particular (in the form of recruiting standards and UCMJ rules) have been so eroded in recent years that there is a larger amount of bad apples than in the past.
