NYT: A Plea for Caution From Russia: What Putin Has to Say to Americans About Syria
New York Times ^ | September 11, 2013 | Vladimir V. Putin

Posted on 09/12/2013 12:51:09 AM PDT by lbryce

MOSCOW — RECENT events surrounding Syria have prompted me to speak directly to the American people and their political leaders. It is important to do so at a time of insufficient communication between our societies.

Relations between us have passed through different stages. We stood against each other during the cold war. But we were also allies once, and defeated the Nazis together. The universal international organization — the United Nations — was then established to prevent such devastation from ever happening again.

The United Nations’ founders understood that decisions affecting war and peace should happen only by consensus, and with America’s consent the veto by Security Council permanent members was enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The profound wisdom of this has underpinned the stability of international relations for decades.

"the international trade in conventional arms, from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships. The treaty will foster peace and security by putting a stop to destabilising arms flows to conflict regions. It will prevent human rights abusers and violators of the law of war from being supplied with arms. And it will help keep warlords, pirates, and gangs from acquiring these deadly tools."

This position also locks in the status quo; it ensures that those in power remain in power and that the ability to replace a repressive regime is removed from the hands of the people.

Beware the wolf in sheep's clothing.

What I didn't like about the letter was: (1) any reference to obedience to international, UN law. The US is a sovereign nation, and we'll act in our own best interest, the UN be damned. (2) all the suspicion raising sections regarding "peace": Israel, Palestinians, Syria, etc. Putin is acting in Russia's self-interest, and at this point we know they side with their long-time Arab clients. (3) American exceptionalism is not about being better than anyone else, it is about our unique history and aspiration for real freedom.

What I did like about the letter: (1) The mention of God: it's refreshing to see a former head of KGB appealing to God, whether he meant it or not. (2) The insistence that the rebels are Islamic fundamentalist jihadists. I agree with that, and I know that supporting them is signing a death warrant for Syrian Christians, and signing a license to attack Israel in the future, and to give them control of vast quantities of WMDs which they will use against their enemies, the US being their major enemy. (3) The acknowledgement that Obama has screwed this up. He has. Royally.

Putin’s Op-Ed and “appeal to the American people” says out loud what US State-controlled media dare not utter: Obama is too stupid to be U.S. President and an international leader. It is dangerous when an idiot takes the controls. It is very dangerous indeed when an idiot at the controls believes he is a genius.

Putin is no stranger to arrogance, but his is based on ruthless intelligence and longterm personal success. How galling it must be to see Obama strut about, chin jutted Il Duce-style, proclaiming himself exceptional, while he knows nothing about diplomacy and hypocritically jettisons the “international concensus” he used to champion whenever it disagrees with his jihadi agenda.

US arrogation of a unilateral right, even an obligation, to attack countries that suppress internal minorities (e.g., Chechens; Islamic militants) or even use WMD within their own borders, would be seen as an existential threat by Putin, and by China (which systematically suppresses Tibetans and Uighurs). Were Obama and Kerry too dim to know that before starting this fiasco? Do they have no experienced advisors? Or are they too arrogant to listen?

So you really think Putin is on par with Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Roosevelt? Really?

McAinal, Grahaministry are now even more irrelevant than their buddies Obozo the Liar and Kerry.

Zerobozo, Kerry, McAnial, and Grahaministry are now totally irrelevant in the real world outside of the beltway.

The chess player is taking the High Moral Ground and making Obama look like a the fool he is, and Obama can’t call him a Racist. We are being regulated to death, invaded by millions who are breaking our immigration laws but I dare not even get a parking ticket. And I’m sick and tired of being lied to, thieved from, and being spied on!

He has no respect whatsoever for Obama and this translates to no respect for the US.

Putin would never have written such editorial when GW Bush was president.

GWB wasn’t as arrogant and stupid as our present occupant of the white house.

There wouldn’t have been a need for Putin to write a letter like that to GWB.

I can't disagree with anything the man said.

And I disagree with Drudge's bi-line. I do not believe he was mocking the US - I would expect any non American to hold the same opinion concerning American exceptionalism.

In a way he is correct. We have fags all in our faces and the military, queer marriage, exploding debt, gutting our defense, porous borders, heavy tax burdens, half our population on welfare, our achievements now are social media widgets as opposed to putting men on the moon, industry is shrinking... Compared to what we were in the 80’s or before we have lost a lot.

However, I will only say to him if we are so bad why does everyone want to come here? (Inside I know that most just want a free ride)

I think Putin, while seeing the US as a rival (not as necessarily an enemy), truly is concerned about what he sees happening in the West....the guy is a fan of Solzhenitsyn, who tried to warn us about the decline of the West.

Russia is an oppressive government. America isn’t far behind. Anytime a government becomes as massive as America’s government has, it will be oppressive and over-reaching.

We win a few skirmishes to beat it back and we celebrate, but it doesn’t even register as it is so massive. We’re throwing pebbles in an ocean.

American exceptionalism might return if we toss out most of our institutions. Toss 75% of government, government schools, government colleges, welfare, dependence on government in general.

I can see what Vlad is trying to do here: Obama has repeatedly Knocked American exceptionalism and said it’s no big deal and Americans will have to accept that we’re not the top country in the world anymore.

He has simply used Obozo’s words against him, daring him to disagree and flip flop once again. Putin plays chess while our POS plays cards with Reggie Lover.

“while our POS plays cards with Reggie Lover.”

Is that what they call it now? I learn a new euphemism every day. ;)

Syria is not witnessing a battle for democracy, but an armed conflict between government and opposition in a multireligious country. There are few champions of democracy in Syria. But there are more than enough Qaeda fighters and extremists of all stripes...

Putin is totally right on the above statement... Please God, let Hillary, Kerry and all the other liberal idiots understand the above truth...

I believe under the definition of "force" comes the idea of weapons proliferation. It is the heart of Fast and Furious, the Benghazi scandal and its coverup. It is this action by the Obama Syndicate that is out of step with UN law and it could wind up blowing up in Zer0's face.

Well, 'Fast and Furious' was used against the American right - but other than that the tactics are similar...
