Why is the Roman Catholic Church supporting immigration reform?
The Economist ^ | September 10, 2013 | M.S.L.J.

IN AMERICA Roman Catholic ears are ringing from sermons supporting immigration reform. On September 8th, just before politicians returned to Congress after their summer break, several Catholic bishops spoke in favour of a bill passed by the Senate in June. The legislation would provide a bridge to citizenship for the 11m people currently residing in America without legal authorisation to do so (and also proposes $46 billion for border security measures). It followed on from vigils in August in support of reform of immigration policies (pictured). Prospects for the passage of any sort of immigration reform in the current legislative session are fading quickly, while the chances of the Senate bill passing the House of Representatives are currently low. But the Roman Catholic church is increasing pressure from the pulpit. Why is the church interested in changing immigration policies?

This is not the first time that Catholics in America have tried to help those there illegally. Seven years ago the church launched the “Justice for Immigrants” campaign after legislation was passed in December 2005 to impose sanctions upon anyone assisting undocumented immigrants. But as they explain on their website, Catholic bishops support neither illegal immigration nor an "amnesty" to pardon those who reside without proper authorisation. Instead the church prefers a softer approach based on prayers and catechisms, alongside more direct methods of reaching politicians through letters and template e-postcards. It seems to want to ensure that foreign nationals of “good character” can earn a legitimate status, families can be together and needy workers are given a chance to gain employment legally.

They areas guided. And the Catholic Church must get more sophisticated about this. The Catechism states we are not to promote such an invasion lest the host country is depleted of resources, rendering it unable to provide charitable service

The Vatican would be well advised to take note

The other churches could follow suit. No one here wants people in need to perish. But expletive that does not mean allowing an invasion of a large number of people who will not respect our country it’s laws and its culture and language if we give it all away to them

“FWIW, I polled FReepers on Sunday and not a single one was subjected to a homily about illegals / amnesty / etc”

In my dioscese, the Bishop said the homily about immigration did not necessarily have to be on the 8th, and our priest talked about Syria, instead. I’m sure the immigration one will be coming up soon.

No, Buckeye. Look at the situation. These people in the first place do not contribute. Every time we ( now) have a fundraiser the faces of the recipients are immigrants and spanish speaking illegitimate and disrespectful of our language and culture

They are not here to give, not to the country or the church

This is seven by sentiment without regard for the economic and political implications

Look at who’s driving it. Look at who the particular Bishops are. They are driven by sentiment and it is shockingly unwise

But they are not a group bound by a common greed. They are bound by a common national loyalty

I have written to mine. My pastor as well as the bishop has heard from me on this. They know there’s no more $ from my family until they renounce this. Those donation envelopes can be used for sending messages

They coulfld but they dont even have to The Church has done that for them on this subject. The Church has already read the Bible on this and has stated that it is stupid, based, again, on Boblical teaching and reference, to get involved in politics , to promote an invasion and to promote illegal activity.

No. Not so.

Anyway, look at the particular members of the USCCB who are promoting this. They weren’t even IN this country at that time

It wouldn't surprise me.

I would find it ironic if one of our deacons, a (legal) immigrant from the PI (who had to wait 15 years for his visa and HATES illegal immigration) was the one tagged to give the homily when it comes.

Clarification: There is NO Roman Catholic Church in Acirema, save for pockets of “right-wing extremists, clinging to their guns and religion”. What passes for a Church is as much Catholic as Mohammedans are tolerant.

The Jesuit run Astalli refugee center in Rome on Tuesday

Go study your lesson and you'll discover that the USCCB and Pope Francis are in step with one another. You're out of step with Rome.

Nope.

You cannot find a word from the Vatican nor the Pope (the Roman Catholic Church) as the Economist claims, which calls for this amnesty in our country.

I expect flames and flames with no such citation. So don’t waste our time

Wait in a few minutes the Church minions will declare that this is a lie, the “Church” does not support this issue nor does it support socialism and the re-distribution of wealth.........lies I tell ell you lies.

I quoted text from a Vatican paper one time that supports socialism, I was advised on here that because I was not a Catholic I did not have the mind of a Catholic and therefore could not understand what the paper meant...

Thank you, stanne. Well said.

There is a socialist/Marxist cabal in the Church. We know them when we see them, and they’re noise makers, we know when we hear them, and they sit among the Bishops Conference and they are in the government, all, giving us a bad name.

This is not new. Since the beginning they have been among us but against God and His people. It shall not end, but by the intervention of God.

There are 195 dioceses/archdioceses in the United States.

When the article notes that “several Catholic bishops spoke” the number that is assigned to the vague term “several” is six. And those six were in heavily hispanic dioceses

6 out of 195 is 3%

News flash; the Church does not follow the Vatican Paper.

It’s a 2000 year old institution founded by Jesus, which follows the Bible, Tradition and the Magesterium.

A few Hispanic bishops within the USCCB have hijacked this issue but in fact the Church does not condone illegal behavior, invasions nor insertion by the clergy into politics

It’s always tedious to recall how some Free Republic posters cling to media libs’ statements when it comes to this bashing

I didn’t see your poll on Sunday but my parish is in a heavily Hispanic neighborhood in Los Angeles Co. and immigration was not mentioned in the homily at the Mass I attended.

>> Simple. Because the Roman Catholic Church is the predominant religion in all those Spanish-speaking countries whose citizens are breaching our Southern border. <<

So why is the Southern Baptist Convention (and all other major Christian denominations in the U.S.) also supporting illegal immigration?

1. The socialist USCCB supports immigration reform, not the Church.

2. Other churches also support immigration reform, let’s scrutinize them as well.

3. Not all bishops- just like not all preachers, reverends, rabbis, etc. -are socialists. The Steubenville diocese has a very conservative bishop that did not have the priests push amnesty last week. He will personally be presiding over a Blue Mass this Sunday, as part of his 9/11 memorial service.
