Siskiyou County votes to pursue secession from California

It's the Golden State's latest version of the Great Secession.

Fed up by Sacramento's regulations and Southern California's political sway, residents in one rural Northern California county are taking steps to leave the state.

The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors voted, 4-1, on Tuesday to pursue seceding from California, the Redding Record Searchlight reported. Proponents say Siskiyou should form a new state -- called Jefferson -- with other counties in Northern California and Southern Oregon they believe share similar interests.

You can’t secede from a State. This is pure cutting and running. Tired of these silly little movements here and there. Stand up and be a Conservative. Stop running away.

Of course, they can’t secede in any event.

"You can’t secede from a State"

While that may be true, this is a good indication of the mood of voters in many areas of the nation. Especially, liberal areas. The county I live in is in dark blue Washington and voters here just qualified a ballot measure to convene a Freeholders' Convention and rewrite the Charter (constitution) of the county. Many of the rules that are strangling liberty could be changed if this is carried through.

It would make more sense to kick the cities out of the states. Let the states be the large sparsely populated areas, and cities can be city-states.

(freom the other thread that's been locked)

RE: "As a land owner of Tehama County [just south of Siskiyou] ... count me in."

On our many trips up I-5 we always wondered what the big "State of Jefferson" sign was about and looked it up on the web a while back. It made very good sense to us being that we believe in self determination and the right to own and use your property.

This probably won't go anywhere. But, If it did we could be tempted to move down there and be a lot closer to our grand kids in Placer Co.

They do stand up, but they’re outnumbered. It is kind of crazy that vast swaths of the country are lorded over by city states, tiny dots of blue in seas of red.

Maybe congressional districts should be based on square miles, and not people per square mile.

Conservatives are some of the first to run from controlling big gov leftist...They give up the best to settle for less. I'm not in that camp.

You'll note, I'm still here., I'm not going anywhere. I've been to where they run away to..lol...No thanks.

That being said, I fully support these people and the message they are sending to the controlling leftist and Communist running Sacramento.

California has a colorful history of seceeding. The town of Rough and Ready was it’s own country for one week during the gold rush. Then someone pointed out that they could not celebrate the 4th of July if they were out of the USA. They all voted.....all drunk gold miners....to move back into the USA and the whole thing was forgotten.

I lived there for a year.

The constitution either explicitly gives the people a right, explicitly gives the federal government the right to give or not give that right to the people, or that right, by default, remains the state’s to give or not give to it’s people.

You, show us, where in the constitution, this right is explicitly removed from mthe states.

Believe me, I KNOW what I am talking about here. the word “Secession” is being used here to dismiss the concept and engender thoughts of the Civil War. The proposal is to carve out a new state out of a portion of California just like the state of Maine was carved out of the state of Massachusetts. The Constitution of the United State provides for this under Article 4, Section 3. It require a majority consent of the CA state legislature and Congress. It does not require approval by the President.

This is a serious proposal made in hopes that other counties in N. CA will follow suit. Modoc county already has it on their agenda week after next and I understand Shasta County will follow suit. There are grassroots committees in Butte and Tehama Counties. It is hoped 20 or more adjacent counties will declare their desire and that a Republican and a Democrat legislator will cosponsor the bill.

I hope this comment at the site was sarcasm. I fear not.

They’d starve. Not a single one of these redneck rural areas have a large enough tax base. They need funding from the larger, more populous liberal urban areas to survive. They are T-bagger socialists in the very worse way.”

This was not directed at you, but an alleged lawyer ... if there is a citation I would like to be enlightened ... enough said.
1. States do not have rights, only people do, the state have “powers”
2. Read the 10th amendment. “simplistic but a primer” for the issue at hand.
