(Tax-cheat Charlie) Rangel: Bring back the draft before launching air strikes in Syria
The Hill ^ | 9/01/13 | Sheldon Alberts

Posted on 09/01/2013 5:49:47 PM PDT by Libloather

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) on Sunday renewed his call to reinstate the draft, arguing a vote should be held on mandatory military service before any decision is taken to launch strikes against Syria.

“I truly believe we should have a National Draft Act before the Congress acts,” Rangel told MSNBC.

Rangel, a decorated veteran of the Korean War, has for several years introduced legislation to bring back the draft and earlier this, for the first time, advocated that women should be included.

The New York lawmaker said the burden of war unfairly falls on lower-income Americans.

“They are not in the Hamptons. They are not in the wealthy neighborhoods,” he said.

Rangel, a former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and the third-longest-serving member of Congress, has made it clear he will vote “no” on a forthcoming resolution seeking congressional approval for limited strikes on Syria.

Although Rangel said he is satisfied that Syrian President Bashar Assad is responsible for poison gas attacks on his own people last month, he argued it is not the U.S.’s responsibility to respond on behalf of the world.

“There is no mandate that the United States of America has to get rid of every evil person,” Rangel said.

“If it’s an international problem it should be an international solution.”

Rangel said he would not attend a Sunday afternoon “members-only” briefing for lawmakers on Capitol Hill about the proposed Syrian military strike because he could not justify the use of force to his constituents.

“If I have the slightest idea how this gross violation of international law affects citizens of the United States of America, my ears are open to see the connection,” he said.

President Obama surprised many in Congress on Saturday by announcing he would seek congressional approval before launching military strikes he argues are necessary to hold Assad accountable for the use of chemical weapons.

In a letter to Obama last week, 53 liberal Democrats — including many members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) argued that Assad’s actions "should not draw us into an unwise war” without first having Congress authorize the action.

On Sunday, liberal Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) argued there is no justification for U.S. involvement — especially since the country lacks allies for its proposed strikes.

“How is it that this is always our responsibility?” Grayson said on MSNBC.

The proper course of action is not to bomb Syria, but to take Assad to the international war crimes court in The Hague.

“What would change my mind is someone explaining to me what the heck this has to do with us,” he said.

He knows that there is no political tide in favor of it so by linking Syria to the draft---no action in Syria.

Kind of interesting that he’s doing it now. Kind of a shot across the bow of the scow of Obama.

So why does Rangel want to reinstate the draft?

A country that can't raise enough volunteers to defend itself isn't worth defending.

Democrats want a country that needs a draft.

So why does Rangel want to reinstate the draft?

Him? The logic is sound on his part. Libs are usually cowards and the good Congressman Rangel actually served and went to Korea.

He obviously thinks that if liberal politicians actually have to go and tell their constituents that average Americans are going to have fight and die, they will BACK OFF -like the cowards they are.

Some shmucks like Rahm Emaneul actually like the idea. They want every American to serve for two years, like in Israel. Americans have gotten quite used to the idea that their kids don't have to serve in the military.

Something about - ‘only the lower class’ fight the wars?

I think they just hate liberty that much - any chance to FORCE a citizen to do something is rewarding to them.

So Zero is going to drag America into such a huge conflict that our volunteer Army can’t handle it? I bet the next great idea that Rabid Rangel has will be to exempt all of “HIS” people because they have suffered enough in America. Here is my idea, take all the A**hats responsible and all the heroes like Rangel and put them on the front line, first to charge. They want to start another war, a religious one at that, they can be the first to die for the muslims.

One trick pony...Rangel is...

He does this because he thinks that blacks are disproportionately sent into battle more than whites...so by a draft all the white kids get to die equally as the black kids

So in a way he is saying "we be racist" for going to war...

Charlie had a good record as soldier.

He believes the draft should be reinstated and 12% be black and the rest white. He claims too many blacks died in Vietnem-—well too many of both races died in Vietnam.

Personally I would like to see the draft reintroduced, but not for Charlies reasons and it isn’t going to happen anyway.

Young men should serve their country in some sort of way so they learn that our Freedoms are not free or fought for by someone else.

With the cuts in our military we have little chance of a draft.

The far left and the far right can agree that these wars for global domination by the elite are one of the things destroying the US. In spite of all of the protests, VietNam would not have ended if it weren't for the draft and the children of the elite and connected were just as likely to end up in the war zone as the little folk.

We should give Rangel's proposal serious consideration before any rush to voting for war. If politicians won't commit their children to fighting, we shouldn't get involved.

Can you imagine if Obama, who probably went to college as an Indonesian, had to explain why his daughters shouldn't serve in wars he believes in when they're old enough to do so? Maybe Obama can explain to us why he didn't go in the service after he got his undergraduate degree, instead of going further into debt for education.

True...Rangel is a one-trick pony, and he doesn't do even that one trick very well. But at least he is being consistent. Any time a President orders military action (or even considers it) Charlie is there, proposing a reinstatement of the military draft. If it actually comes up for a vote in the House, Charlie will vote against his own proposal, as he has several times in the past.

Charlie doesn't really want the draft reinstated. He just wants to beat the "black kids are dying instead of white kids" drum at an opportune moment. And he knows the exact moment to start whaling on that drum...right as the President is ordering (or contmeplating) some sort of military action.

A country that can't raise enough volunteers to defend itself isn't worth defending.

That must be why America has always needed the draft.

In WWII, 66% of the military was draftees, 93% of the Army, in WWI it was 72% for the Army.

THIS is the 'actual news' in this article.

If not even RANGEL will vote for it, the answer is already NO.

You and your children first, Charlie.

Anyone who publicly advocates war should be immediately subject to the draft, no matter what his age.

Any politician who favors war should be in the first assault wave, and if he votes for war, he should remain in the front lines until the war is over.
