FORT HOOD – U.S. Army Maj. Nidal Hasan will be executed for the 2009 shooting rampage on post that left 13 people dead and more than 30 wounded.
The jury panel of 13 U.S. Army officers delivered the verdict on post moments before 2 p.m. Wednesday. They deliberated for less than three hours.
Last Friday, the same panel unanimously found Hasan guilty of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder for the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood.
This sentencing verdict ends the court martial after 17 days. In it, Hasan, who defended himself, never revealed a motive, did not present a defense and refused to cross-examine any of his victims.
Hasan will immediately lose his rank of major and he will stop getting paid in two weeks.
The Army will soon transfer him to the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. to begin serving his sentence.
But an execution is not imminent. Hasan automatically gets an appeal and it has been more than 50 years since the military executed anyone.

I doubt he is still referred to as Major. After conviction I suspect rank and salary are zeroed out.

However, there is little chance that he will be executed anytime soon. Even waiving appeals will not get him
killed because the military is very reluctant to execute murderers regardless how egregious their deeds.

This case will automatically go to appeals before the final sentence, and only then will the president get to exercise his decision. Let us hope the appeals process drags out for many, many years, not only to give the penitent lots of time in that wheelchair not only to enjoy his disability and to review his wasted life, his misspent ambition to heroism, the ignominy of his inevitable death, his aborted martyrdom and the fundamental errors of his hate cult; but also to allow another Commander in Chief -- one who loves this nation -- to succeed the present one.
Still, I will be surprised if this execution is ever carried out.
That would not surprise me at all. Never thought I’d see the day the White House was occupied by someone that treats our friends with disdain and panders to those that would kill us.
So, hanging, shooting, or the hot shot?
Someone tell me why those soldiers shouldn't get a Purple Heart. Because they were on US soil? I don't know Army regulations.
