Does not make sense that Israel would be backing the mb.

My guess is that Israeli officials are afraid of Syria playing the Cuban role in a new missile crisis, once Iran gets its nukes up and going. That would reduce Israel's reaction time significantly in the event of a Syrian launch. If online commentary from English language Israeli news sites is any indication, popular opinion in Israel does not favor the Syrian rebels. However, the Israeli leadership is trying to get Assad toppled by hook or by crook before the Iranians get their nukes on line, on the assumption that the Iranians wouldn't place them in a Syria dominated by Sunni Islamists who view exterminating Shiites as the first order of business before embarking on a world tour with Allah's personal assistance (i.e. Koranic catastrophes like plagues, floods, et al, inflicted on the non-Muslim heathens).

As I recall, the ‘secret Israeli intel” turned out to be an ex-Mossad agent. Was not an official Israeli statement.

Israel’s best case scenario is for its many enemies to be fighting each other so they aren’t fighting Israel militarily in the case of Assad and the MB-Al Quaeda or diplomatically like the US, EU, Russia, China etc. etc. with their demands to give up land to the Palestinians.

Israel appears to be getting a lot of what they want right now but risking the possibility of missile attacks from Assad in the process.

I wholeheartedly agree — but it also makes sense that the Israelis would know what is going on. :’) Better to rely on Israeli intel than on Russian, Iranian, and Syrian agitprop as too many seem to do.

Not saying that this is right or justified. Here is how I see what is going on though.

When Assad had almost wiped out the opposition with support from Lebanese Hezbollah, he apparently wanted to reward Hezbollah and Hezbollah was launching attacks on Israel from Syria. Israel doesn't want that. The Al Qaeda "rebels" want to ultimately attack Israel, but right now Israel seems more concerned with not getting attacked by Hezbollah.

80-90% of Muslims are Sunni. The U.S. and Israel is taking the side of the 80-90% of Muslims who are Sunni against the 10-20% who are Shia by having so far supported an overthrow of Assad that the U.S. claims not to be supporting now.

Iran is at least predominantly Shia.

Saudis are predominantly Sunnis.

The Sunnis and Shia have been killing each other for a long time.

All this said, I agree with you that it makes no sense.
