Wal-Mart to Offer Health Benefits to Domestic Partners of U.S. Workers
Wall Street Journal ^ | August 27, 2013 | Shelly Banjo

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. told workers this week that it will begin offering health insurance benefits to the domestic partners of U.S. employees next year.

The extension of health benefits marks a major change for the country’s largest private employer of 1.3 million U.S. workers, which has been targeted by gay-rights advocacy groups for failing to do so.

The move comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in June to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, which had denied federal benefits to gay couples married under state law.

Rather than go state by state, Wal-Mart decided to adopt a blanket approach to ensure consistent treatment of its employees, spokesman Randy Hargrove said.

Nearly two-thirds of the Fortune 500 firms—including General Electric Co. and General Motors Co.—offer such benefits, according to a recent analysis by the Human Rights Campaign, a gay-rights advocacy group.

Your typical “free trader” would probably argue that you have the choice to visit Wal-Mart, or not. No need to run to Uncle Sugar, as protectionists do.

Walmart hasn’t had many full time workers (40 hour) for many years. hussein merely legitimatized it.

Super Walmarts are grocery stores, sell guns or ammo, and are forbidden to millions of Americans as they are kept out of many major cities, Costco is a membership deal, like Sam’s Club, Costco is also very pro democrat party.

They can always claim they’re married. I’ve had many jobs and have put my wives on my insurance and sometimes I was on theirs. I’ve never been asked to provide a copy of a marriage license.

“Can an unmarried man and woman qualify as a domestic partnership?”

Yes. This will affect many more unmarried heterosexual couples than homosexual couples. My employer now offers “soft” benefits (not health insurance) to domestic partners of its workers. It has resisted extending all benefits to domestic partners because of the cost. One estimate I have read is there would be five times more heterosexual couples than homosexual couples that would have to be covered if benefits were extended to all domestic partners.

I've occasionally had to provide a copy (sometimes an official one with a raised seal) of my marriage license when I put my wife on my insurance. My current employer didn't require documentation, and a recent audit found rampant fraud. Approximately 10% of all spousal coverage claims were discovered to be bogus.
