They are offering to bribe them with even more artificially inflated oil prices -— for us, I can only presume.

If the US is going to become a net energy exporter, then high oil prices will be good for us too.

Russia could drive a pretty hard bargain.

Or they could tell Assad and he would probably launch all those missiles intended for Israel at Saudi Arabia.

Russia is definitely interested in controlling more of the oil market, and I have suspected for quite a while they would like SA to be a legitimate target for a big strike on their oilfields.

Logically, the Russians should blow 'em up, as they are completely untrustworthy any other way but dead.

"Mr Skrebowski said trouble is brewing in a string of key supply states. “Libya is reverting to war lordism. Nigerian is drifting into a bandit state with steady loss of output. And Iraq is going back to the sort of Sunni-Shia civil war we saw in 2006-2007,” he said.

The Putin-Bandar meeting was stormy, replete with warnings of a “dramatic turn” in Syria. Mr Putin was unmoved by the Saudi offer, though western pressure has escalated since then. “Our stance on Assad will never change. We believe that the Syrian regime is the best speaker on behalf of the Syrian people, and not those liver eaters,” he said, referring to footage showing a Jihadist rebel eating the heart and liver of a Syrian soldier.

Prince Bandar in turn warned that there can be “no escape from the military option” if Russia declines the olive branch. Events are unfolding exactly as he foretold.

I'd take this reported conversation with a grain of salt, as I remember what the Russians did in Lebanon when similarly threatened by kidnappers, and what they did to the Chechens after Belsan. Bandar would be suicidal to speak that way.

Don’t worry about it.

The Iranians are deeply in debt to Russia, and Russia must have a route to a Mediterranean seaport for their natural gas and petroleum shipments.

The Saudis are concerned with the increased influence of Shiites throughout the area north of Iraq and extending into Lebanon. These two can probably work out a working deal where both profit.

As for Russia and China — the Middle East is known to historians as the “graveyard of empires”.

If we extricate ourselves without sustaining destruction we can count ourselves as lucky.

Russia and China will ask for some serious concessions, not just from the Saudis, but from the US and NATO.

Russia will demand removal of US Forces from Europe and a massive disarmament of US nuclear weapons and Missile Defense. China will demand that the US stop arming Taiwan and reign in the Japanese Defense Forces.

Russia tends to respect alliances, no matter how costly it is.
Also, they have been at war with Sunni islam for centuries and Saudi Arabia is an epicenter. It is a matter of culture, values, probably a racist moment involved but it is how it is. It is mutual from the other side. Russians are extremely non-halal uberinfidels by muslim’s books.
Any alliance between SA and Russia is about as realistic as an alliance between Hitler and Stalin in 1942.
No matter how good a bargain is, it is pretty much impossible.
Too much Russian blood on Sunni jihadi hands and vice versa.

It might be racist, but you are correct, that is the way they think. Russian media sites refer to Bandar as looking like an ape.

Why would Putin trust them? And why would he throw away the chance to dominate the Meditteranean through Syria? Russian influence is also growing daily in Greece, a country impoverished by EU membership.

High oil prices are bad for everyone in the US.

High oil prices mean higher prices and interest rates for everything.

Even if you own oil, they will tax your “excess profits” away in the name of fairness.

I can see Putin and the Sauds telling Assad “We have to allow America to save face. But there will be very few injuries. And, there’s a lot in it for you AND for us.”

Obama gets his “moment of peace” and everyone is happy.

Or, Putin outsmarts Obama and simply calls him the schoolyard punk that he is and tells him to do whatever the hell he thinks is best for his country.

It’s sad that the last two presidents have been made by Putin to look like little girls in bobby sock.

It’s pretty hard for the Saudis replace a warm water port on the Med for Russian war ships

Does Putin want to show the world an example of selling out an ally (unsavory as he might be) for oil? Makes him no better than the USA

Besides the Russians have other ways to achieve dominance over the global oil markets without making a deal with the fickle duplicitous Sauds-

just survive and form a new axis with China, as barry and the eurocrats take the US and Europe to continuing economic and social bankrupcty

So by leaking this story to the Russian press Putin does three things:

1. Tells the world that he won’t buckle under pressure to drop Assad.
2. Tells the Saudis and everyone else that he can’t be threatened.
3. Calls the Chechen rebels Saudi puppets, which will play well at home.

I can’t verify it, but I have read that many Russians believe oil is a renewable resource and not a “fossil fuel”. I don’t know what the actual prevailing opinion is. If that’s so, what you said makes a lot of sense. They wouldn’t make a deal like this because they know/think they’ll always have enough oil.
