BroadwayWorld has confirmed that First Lady Michelle Obama and her daughters, Malia and Sasha, attended last night's evening performance of THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL, starring Tony-winner Cicely Tyson.
According to a source within the production, the Obama ladies slipped into their seats just prior to the beginning of the show, though received a "huge ovation" when they returned at intermission for the second act. After the curtain call, the Obamas went backstage and met the cast and crew, including Cuba Gooding, Jr., Vanessa Williams, and Tyson.
This afternoon, a Tweet was sent from BOUNTIFUL's official Twitter page to Obama, saying: "Thank you for taking the trip to #Bountiful last night, @FLOTUS! We hope you enjoyed the show."

“A Trip To Bountiful” was originally written for and performed by white actors. Around two years ago, I saw an excellent version at a local Washington, DC theatre that used black actors, and it didn’t feel forced at all. I guess the idea caught on, and now Broadway is doing the show with some of America’s great black actors. (It’s true that Gooding, like Nicholas Cage, will make any movie for a buck, but he’s still a top actor. See “Jerry McGuire” for proof of that.)
At least the Obamas are going to a great show this time. “A Trip to Bountiful” is a very underrated play.
When they went to see “Book of Mormon” I thought it was in bad taste for them to see a show that millions of Americans find offensive. I’m not Mormon, but the president is the representative of everyone, and a little more sensitivity would be nice.
