Maureen Dowd attributes misquote to 'noisy' coffee shop
Politico ^ | August 21, 2013 | Dylan Byers

Posted on 08/25/2013 5:56:21 AM PDT by SunkenCiv

In her column, Dowd quoted de Blasio's wife Chirlane McCray as saying that mayoral challenger Christine Quinn was "not accessible ... She's not the kind of person I feel I can go up to and talk to about issues like taking care of children at a young age and paid sick leave."

Quinn used this slight to accuse the de Blasio campaign of faulting her for being a childless lesbian. In fact, audio of the full quote, which was subsequently released by de Blasio's campaign, shows that McCray's marks may have been far more tame. The Times has since issued a correction and updated Dowd's column.

"As the transcript makes clear, her actual comments were about Speaker Quinn’s unwillingness to listen to the people on education, and paid sick leave, and any suggestion otherwise is disingenuous and absurd," de Blasio's campaign said in a statement. "It is wrong for Speaker Quinn and her campaign to distort and confuse with baseless attacks in order to distract from the Speaker's indefensible policy record."

The Quinn camp disagrees: "We stand by our statement, as the essence of Ms. McCray's quote is the same," the campaign said.

Dowd sides with Quinn on this one, but remains apologetic.

"The substance is the same, but the quote should be exact," she told POLITICO. "We have the whole quote online now; we'll have the whole quote again corrected in the print edition tomorrow, I've apologized to the DeBlasio and Quinn campaigns and I am going to buy some kind of noise-cancelling microphone for my recorder."

As others have already done, let’s put this Dowd error in context: It is not the first time she’s screwed up a quote in her column, and all of her screw-ups conveniently end up turning unremarkable statements into more outrageous ones.
"Please fire Maureen Dowd … or get her a fact-checker", Alex Pereene, Salon Magazine, August 22, 1013.

I know who it is. FR protocol is a post a CZJ pic on all articles that pertain to Maureen in any way. Dowd used to date Michael Douglas.

I remember one time during the Bush administration when Dowd intentionally used ellipsis to turn the President's statement into an absurdity. He said that the members of al Qaeda who had been killed or captured were no longer a problem. She removed the "killed or captured" part to make it appear that President Bush didn't think al Qaeda was a problem. Being a liberal nut case is one thing. Intentionally misquoting someone brings it to a higher level of journalistic dihonesty.

This is just a reminder to anyone talking to the press to have your own audio or video recording of the event. They will lie about what you have said and you will need proof of the truth.

Absolutely!
Recording devices these days are small, convenient, and reliable. Any politician who talks to anybody in the scumbag Democrat "mainstream" newsrooms and doesn't self-record the conversation - - or at least make sure there are several friendly witnesses around - - is a moron who is unfit for office.
