New York Attorney General sues Donald Trump for $40M, claiming 'Trump University' fraud
FoxNews ^ | 8/25/2013 | AP

Posted on 08/25/2013 2:43:02 AM PDT by Ron C.

New York's attorney general sued Donald Trump for $40 million Saturday, saying the real estate mogul helped run a phony "Trump University" that promised to make students rich but instead steered them into expensive and mostly useless seminars, and even failed to deliver promised apprenticeships.

Trump shot back that the Democrat's lawsuit is false and politically motivated.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says many of the 5,000 students who paid up to $35,000 thought they would at least meet Trump but instead all they got was their picture taken in front of a life-size picture of "The Apprentice" TV star.

"Trump University engaged in deception at every stage of consumers' advancement through costly programs and caused real financial harm," Schneiderman said. "Trump University, with Donald Trump's knowledge and participation, relied on Trump's name recognition and celebrity status to take advantage of consumers who believed in the Trump brand."

But Trump's attorney accused Schneiderman of trying to extort campaign contributions from the real estate mogul through his investigation of Trump. Attorney Michael D. Cohen told The Associated Press on Saturday that Schneiderman's lawsuit was filled with falsehoods. Cohen said Trump and his university never defrauded anyone.

He said Trump University provided nearly 11,000 testimonials to Schneiderman from students praising the program and said 98 percent of students in a survey termed the program "excellent."

"The attorney general has been angry because he felt that Mr. Trump and his various companies should have done much more for him in terms of fundraising," Cohen said. "This entire investigation is politically motivated and it is a tremendous waste of taxpayers' money."

The NY AG is an idiot, but claiming a 98% satisfaction rate insane. Its against human nature. At no time in history has 98% of the people in a large group ever agreed.

You are right. That figure cannot possibly be true. I suspect something like 90% now know they were duped, however. And, despite what others have said on this thread, it might be illegal depending on what was promised and what was delievered.

That is not a joke.

I don’t for sure see any proof of that number beyond the claim quoted, but that is beyond excellent. 98%.

I suspect another agenda.

That is all I’m saying.

“At no time in history has 98% of the people in a large group ever agreed.”

Except in some Democrat precincts at election time.

If Trump’s courses are useless, he should be held accountable.

Same as the State University of New York.

Same as many public high schools and elementary schools.

I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for the AG to take action on those, however.

Offer, acceptance = contract

BTW, the progressive should fix the public schools, so much money wasted in public K-12 education.

Thanks for posting this. I have edited it a little.

‘If Trump’s courses are useless, he should be held accountable.’

Same as any NY college or any New York State University.

Same as many public high schools and elementary schools.

I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for the AG to take action on those, however.

What did they want for just $ 35,000?

It’s a publicity stunt by the NYAG. Courts have already tossed cases of law school grads suing the law schools they attended because the grads didn’t like their job prospects after graduating. The grads claimed the school(s) provided misleading data to get them to enroll. Courts said, in essence, Caveat Emptor. Suits vs. Trump U will have the same result.

Here’s the problem with that. People will still sign up, even if it’s of no value, because of the name Donald Trump. Because he has been highly successful in a difficult real estate market, he knows real estate and people would trust him even if he tells them crap.

My father had a recent dishonesty with an insurance company. He’s a senior, about 76 years of age, and he got hit by a car. He was knocked to the pavement and broke his hip. The insurance company went to him and had him sign some documents, while he was high on pain killers and not cognitive as to what he was signing.

In a nutshell, the insurance company had him sign some documents that minimize what they have to pay out to him, an inadequate fund for the amount of rehabilitation he is going to need to recover. Unfortunately because of his age, there is a very real chance he will die within the next six months, because when a senior gets a hip fracture, they very rarely recover fully.

Now it is fortunate that there is a real chance of having a judge over turn what they had him sign, because of his inability to understand what it is that he signed and the fact that, while in the hospital, he has given strict guidelines that he is to be represented by his daughter.

If it weren’t for a public judge, there would be no recourse in the free market. Free market only works well when both parties are honest men. When one is a crook, the only recourse is a public judge.

My mother in law lived 12 years after breaking her hip. After the first year, and until the last those were very active years. She was 78 at the time. She may have defied the stats, I don’t know, but never looked at her broken hip as a death sentence.

But, you’re right, most insurance companies suck. Big time.

I am not a Trump fan, the guy is a known shyster

Sure - just look at the number of people on this very thread that Trump has conned into thinking he's an upstanding and worthwhile conservative businessman.

I don't have much faith in the AG, but I have none in that hypocritical, bailout-supporting, taxpayer-money-sucking scumbag.

Let the courts at it. If he made promises he didn't keep, then they'll make him pay. If not, then he'll be cleared. But I'm not going to presume that he's suddenly a paragon of virtue just because his latest marketing scheme consists of insulting Obama.

Self selecting group of suckers who fell for the scam in the first place.
