Bystanders Aid Bicyclist Hit by Car in Tonawanda

Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) A young bicyclist was rescued by a number of onlookers after he was hit by a car at a busy Tonawanda intersection Thursday afternoon.

Angelo tells WBEN's Tom Bauerle he was about to make a turn at Sheridan and Delaware when he saw a car hit a young man on a bicycle. "She says he just came in front of her," says Angelo. He cleared the intersection and jumped into action, and was not alone. "It had to be at least a dozen people, everybody, men, women..." described Angelo. "The kid was screaming to help him. When I stood up, people from all over helped him. When we picked up the car, I screamed for someone to drag him out." Angelo says the boy's leg was "bent in half."

Another witness says he saw people running to the scene to rescue the boy. "Half his body was underneath the car," says the witness. "It appears he may have some fractures, but his head and everything looked pretty good."

A story of near-tragedy, and heroism & community spirit from the Buffalo area today -- NOTHING to do with Obama's visit & blather much earlier, although it did take place not too far from that venue.

I'd recommend the audio clip on the site with Angelo, who was one of the citizen heroes...

Nobody should ride bicycles in traffic. They are just a nuisance — they are flat out dangerous.

Bikes should not be on roads. They cause danger for everyone and should be on the sidewalks.

Yep. That's Americans for you.

Bikes should not be on roads. They cause danger for everyone/b> and should be on the sidewalks.

I have tried to find evidence of cyclists killing any motorists in recent decades. The very few that I have found have almost exclusively been cases where a road rage incident ends with a cyclist delivering a lethal beating to a motorist who stopped and wanted to mix it up.

Recently a San Francisco cyclist pleaded guilty to causing the death of a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

I agree cyclist who are idiots are a danger to themselves, but a danger to motorists? Get over yourself.

Near Buffalo and Grand Island. People have to help each other in Tonawanda because they have serious snow, driven by lake-effects. It’s healthy for locals to band together to deal with nature.

Unfortunately they also band together in unions as if employers were a natural enemy.

There’s a law that anyone over 10-y/o is prohibited from riding a bike on the sidewalk.

The relative merits of bicycles as road vehicles aside, a genuine, heartwarming story in contrast to the vapid hero-worship demonstrated here earlier today...

Agreed.

Progressives hate SUVs and we hate bicycles?

Which side do can openers fall on? What’s our position on microwave ovens?

They are putting all kinds of bike lanes in where I live
while taking regular automobile lanes away.

That is a stupid law. Having the bikes on the street is insane and those people are taking their lives into their hands.

Frankly- I could not muster up sympathy for any bicycle rider on a street. I really hope they end up getting forced off the road or charged so much money to use the street and carry insurance, that they have to take themselves out.

Most of them are reckless.

That’s the truth.

It's an injun name.

It means fat girl; literally ton of Wanda.

Ok, I made the fat girl part up, but it is an American (Tuscarora) Indian word.

Obviously you live under a rock.

Elpaso Countyline, a road I have drive to get home.

Bicyclist's are always putting drivers in danger. Will they drive the bike paths provided?

oh NO! they're too good for that, they have to ride the damn road, forcing us to ride behind them at 15 or 20 as they struggle up the hills, or do we cross the center to pass them, risking a head on?

One of these days............

> Bicyclist’s are always putting drivers in danger

Correct, at the very least because cars have to cross double center lines into the opposing lane.

What does it do to the life of an innocent car driver who while being careful accidentally splats an arrogant d***head homo middle-finger flashing skinhead spandex clad bicylist?

What does it do to car safety when time after time we have to cross double center lines into opposing traffic.

You are all full of s***.

The cyclist in question was a child, now deceased. You are clearly in the middle of a homosexual panic.

What does it do to car safety when time after time we have to cross double center lines into opposing traffic.

When you do this you are

1. breaking the law, and

2. responsible for any damage or injuries that you inflict as a result.

You should consider cessation of all driving until you are able to bring your driving skills up to the bare minimum standards, and when you do resume driving consider this option:

Start obeying the law.

You are all full of s***.

Classy. Old ager, are you of the age where we read about you mistaking the brakes for the gas and driving through the wall of the Golden Corral?

Sure, I guess we could discuss the tens of thousands of motorists killed by cyclists on El Paso County line.

Alternatively, you could sober up take a bite of a reality sandwich, admit that no motorists are being hurt by cyclists, get a real life and get over yourself and deal with the 7 seconds of your life that you once lost slowing down for a cyclist.

Or if you can't handle that much reality, maybe you shouldn't bother sobering up.

But thanks for sharing the road, thanks for obeying the law, and thanks for coming to work today!

I want the bicyclists on the road, not mixed with pedestrians.

I just had surgery 15 days ago, on my shoulder, from being run into on a mixed use pathway.

Fast moving cyclists hits senior citizen, slams him to ground, flees scene.

Shoulder (humoral head)shattered into 3 parts. Now has 12 screws. Just kicked narcotic pain meds, which make me sick.

Keep cyclists off pedestrian walkways!!!
