FULGENCIO: Has Rubio alienated the Tea Party with immigration reform?
Washington Times ^ | Aug 13, 2013 | by Jose L. Fulgencio

OKLAHOMA CITY, August 13, 2013 ― The election of Senator Marco Rubio to the U.S. Senate in 2010 was a moment of celebration for the newly formed Tea Party movement as Rubio became known as the “Tea Party darling.”

Rubio’s stump speech about his family’s escape from Fidel Castro’s Cuba never failed to bring people to their feet. The speech reminded his listeners that America is the greatest country on earth and a beacon to the world’s oppressed.

Upon being sworn in, Rubio fought hard against Obamacare and worked to get the U.S. back on the path of economic success. He took his campaign rhetoric to the Senate floor and to news talk shows.

The federal government was wrecking the economy, and Congress had lost touch with the common people. Rubio sang the Tea Party’s tune, becoming the Tea Party poster child. When Mitt Romney became the GOP candidate, Tea Partyers wanted Rubio to be the vice-presidential nominee in 2012.

Rubio’s stance on immigration reform has now put him out of tune with the Tea Party. His participation in the gang of eight has taken him out of grace. Rather than humbly admit error and return to the fold, he went on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show to urge Americans to support the Senate’s immigration reform bill.

A friend of Rubio’s from his Tea Party honeymoon stage, political pundit Ann Coulter, has attacked him for his views on immigration reform. She isn’t alone, but he may not care. His role in immigration reform may signify the start of his 2016 presidential campaign, and he may have decided that the Tea Party won’t get him to the White House.

The conventional wisdom is that in order to win the 2016 Presidential election, Republicans must reach out to Hispanic voters...

Tea Party may not get him there, but it will keep him from it. Romney is proof of that.

In addition, Rubio is one of the least articulate, least intelligent politicians I’ve met in a while.

Does he really believe that conservatives caving to amnesty will win us votes from career criminals (isn’t that what an illegal alien is?)?

Absurd.

IMO, Rubio was the lesser of two evils from the get go. Not a truly positive choice.

He was never my “darling”

Can he ever win me over? No chance. We know he believes every thing he’s said about amnesty (which is traitorous IMO). If he were to backpedal on it I know that would be nothing more than lies of political convenience.

He’s already told the truth, any changes from here on in are bald faced lies.

“speech about his family’s escape from Fidel Castro’s Cuba”

His family didn't escape Fidel Castro’s Cuba, they “escaped” Batista's Cuba.

There’s nothing wrong with immigration reform, it just has to be the right set of reforms. Let’s finish building the WALL first, then we can discuss it. No wall, no reforms.

If so, he would only have a viable chance of winning if her were the dems’ vp candidate. The pubbies, who have alienated their core, would never win with him.

At present, Rubio would be damaged goods as a GOP VP nominee, yet events and his actions could change that. For example, what if Rubio had a key role in ending Obamacare, or scored some other major accomplishment for conservatives? I much prefer Ted Cruz, but Rubio has considerable talent and cannot be fully counted out of Presidential politics.

The dim o’wit party does not give a flying fig that whites, blacks, and hispanics are against amnesty.

They covet all those millions of easily-led new dim o’wit voters because...

They’re looking for the power and control to destroy us all and tear America down, and that is their only goal.

Never give up your guns. Never retreat. Never surrender.

The only “reform” I want to see is Congressional reform where all elected politicians enforce the excellent immigration law we already have.

I don’t think so Rockingham. Rubio stood before the American people and lied right to their faces. He now has zero credibility with the grassroots. I wouldn’t trust him for dog catcher. His credibility is shot, and he only has himself to blame.

His talent as an undiscovered liar is gone. He doesn’t really have any other talent left. Anything he does from now on, even ending Obamacare, means nothing because he can never again be trusted. He promised the people one thing if they voted for him. They did and he made certain he long knife stabbed them in the back. There is nothing that can be done to rehabilitate Rubio now. That is the price you pay for being a traitor to your country, and a liar.

The only people who believe he can be redeemed are his RINO buddies of the GOPe and they are desperately trying everything they can imagine.

I saw Nixon, McCain, and Romney get nominated for President after seemingly fatal political deceits and zig zags. I am not saying that Rubio will overcome his self-inflicted wounds, only that it is possible, even if unlikely.

My best hopes are with Ted Cruz, but politics can take odd twists and turns and thereby resurrect failed careers. Churchill, for example, was widely disliked and scorned for his many derelictions and faults, but he rejected appeasement of Nazi Germany when almost all the country and political establishment favored it. As a result, when Britain found itself at war with Hitler and determined not to make a peace treaty, Churchill was recognized as the only credible war leader. It may take a similar twist of history for Rubio to recover, but it cannot be ruled out.
