Detroit goes to the dogs

As the human exodus from bankrupt Detroit picks up speed, packs of feral dogs are overrunning the city’s streets and abandoned buildings.

Bloomberg reports that as many as 50,000 canines prowl through the Motor City’s darkened roads and condemned houses, causing serious problems for the few people that remain.

“It was almost post-apocalyptic,” said Amanda Arrington of the Humane Society, who visited the city last October. “There are no businesses, nothing except people in houses and dogs running around.”

The threat of dog attacks have forced the Postal Service to temporarily halt delivery in certain neighborhoods. One mail carrier recalled using clouds of pepper spray to disperse swarms of small but savage hounds.

“It’s like Chihuahuaville,” she said.

One woman was attacked four months ago by two strays while sitting on her porch. The animals tore off the woman’s scalp during the assault.

I guess this story won’t be featured on those “Pure Michigan” commercials encouraging tourism... There’s probably a lawsuit just waiting to be brought by some recent visitor who was gullible enough to take that bait.

Those pure Michigan ads are an irritation to most of us.

They cost too much money and target a very narrow customer base. They portray lots of golf but almost completely miss the fact that the big draw in Michigan is hunting, camping, fishing etc.

If sports are your thing, Detroit can’t be beat and downtown is plenty clean and safe.

This is so sad.

At the end of Desert Storm, my stepson was part of th M.P. detail tasked with driving around and shooting all the packs of feral dogs. He cried when he told me of it.

I don’t think there’s any other way this will be resolved in Detroit.

I have my grandfather’s single-barrel, breach-break, 10ga (we can’t make-out the mfgr’s name on the barrel or buttplate) and that bad boy has got a recoil not to be believed. He used it to put food on Dad’s Family’s table during the 30s. It’s a freaking cannon, but a single shot.

I have a Remy Police Tactical 870 Pump and a Remy 1187 Police Tactical Autoloader, both with special buttstock pads, which I’d probably choose over that 10ga. It’s in my dbl-door gunsafe, restored, just as a keepsake.

The select-fire/suppressed AR-15’s w/ 60-rnd SureFire mags lays down some serious firepower and would decimate a pack of dogs in short order.

10ga? 12ga? AR-15? AR-10? Tough choice...
