Poll Finds New York Rudest, Most Arrogant State In The Nation
CBS 2 NY ^ | August 21, 2013

New York is number one again, but this time it’s for being the rudest and most arrogant state in the country.

A new survey from Business Insider asked 1,600 Americans to answer questions about states they don’t live in, like which were the drunkest, the smartest or had the silliest accents.

“The results were hilarious, informative and tell you everything you need to know about the dynamic between the states,” Business Insider said on its website.

It found that 39 percent of those polled felt New York was the most arrogant state and 44 percent felt it was the rudest.

Georgia and Minnesota tied for nicest. Louisiana was judged as the drunkest state and Massachusetts took first place for weirdest accents, followed close behind by Louisiana, Alabama, Minnesota, New York and New Jersey.

Americans think New York has the second-smartest people after Massachusetts.

The poll found California was America’s favorite state and Texas was the one most would like to see kicked out of the country.

I’m 72. Have heard this all of my life, and a poll is needed to confirm?

weirdest accents, followed close behind by Louisiana, Alabama, Minnesota, New York and New Jersey

I wonder if respondents based their answers on the actual accents of people from these states. For example, if I tell someone from another state that I am from New Jersey, they'll respond with something like "Don't you mean New Joisey?" I have yet to hear anyone from north, south, or central New Jersey ever pronounce it that way. If not that, they wonder why I don't sound like Tony Soprano.

I guess I know how the Minnesotans feel when people think they all sound like they should be in the movie Fargo.

Once having a job that required extensive cold calling, I tend to agree. If NY, NJ or New England were on the docket you’d cringe just hoping to get thru the day.

Nicest people I found (at least on the phone) were in Houston and, believe it or not, Southern California.

Pittsburgh and Baltimore deserve spots on that weirdest accent list.

Like the old joke: A tourist walks up to a cop in downtown New York and taps him on the shoulder. The cop turns around and asks, “What?” The tourist replies, “Can you tell me how to get to Times Square or should I just go to he**?”

I lived in the LA area for 26 years. The people there were great, but not like Memphis.

I have only been to New York City a couple of times, but found regular working people there to be down-to-earth and helpful. One friend-of-a-friend spent 45 minutes educating me on subway lines, points of interest, how to avoid looking like a tourist. She even drew an excellent map. Another one let me spend the night at her place, and a third one met me and my travel buddy at a restaurant and spent the evening telling us stories about the Brooklyn district attorneys’ office.

I’ve met good people from New Jersey, too.

People I’ve met from in and around Memphis are some of the nicest and most polite I’ve ever encountered. Never had to make many phone calls in there though.

“...Texas was the one most would like to see kicked out of the country.”

That would be fine, but I’d be inclined to join them if they were.

The Iggles play in the National Football Ligue.

In summertime, people from Philly often geaux downashore and swim in the wooder. If they get hungry, they may say something like, "Come awn, let's get some cheese steaks, heaugies, and wooder ice."
