Authorities say an escaped inmate suspected of shooting a southwest Iowa sheriff's deputy has been killed by a homeowner who said the armed man broke into his house.
Rodney Long was shot to death after he broke into a retired farm couple's home in Bedford about 10:15 p.m. Monday, awakening them. Long, who was armed with a handgun, cut their telephone lines and used their cell phone, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Mitch Mortvedt said.
After about four hours, Jerome Mauderly, 71, shot Long with a shotgun in the kitchen of the home he shares with his wife, Carolyn, 66.
"As the situation wore on the decision was made by the Mauderlys they were going to defend themselves," Mortvedt said. "At 2:11 a.m. the Taylor County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from Carolyn Mauderly."
She told a dispatcher that her husband had shot an intruder.

escaped inmate’s family to sue shooter in 3...2...1...
“WHEW, the shooting “victim” was White, it’s cool, no biggie.”
That’s what I was thinking, had he been “of color” jessie and al would have had to take another road trip.
Pest control regardless of race ...
That situation would have ‘wore on’ for about 1.5 seconds at my house.
Now everyone knows they took Biden’s advice.
This is the right that the left wants to take away from us.
A shotgun at close range is a devastating weapon.
Trash comes in every color, including white of course, and needs to be ‘taken out’ occasionally.
Wish they would give the details on how this couple was able to get the drop on the thug.
I love a story with a happy ending! Some of the creative members of our family suggested they skip the autopsy and spend the money on taxidermy. Put the stuffed perp out front as a warning to others, and tell the taxidermist to be sure to capture the surprised look on the crook’s face.
He shoots.... He SCORES!!!!(crowd goes wild)
Yes, it is. It’s going to take a visit from Serve-Pro to ever get that kitchen cleaned up.
Maybe it was an upper chest shot and bile didn’t get splattered through his back.
I imagine the homeowner anticipated the splatter, and he blew the burglar’s testicles off.
That would take too long to achieve the final outcome. I’m guessing a chest shot.
Me too. That’s what I’d do. The Mrs. wants to remodel the kitchen anyway....
You ever see what buckshot does to kitchen cabinets? It’s not a pretty sight. A friend of mine found that out.
Probably pretty bad. I don’t imagine soft tissue slows the pellets down much...especially when they’re BBs, like most of my “around the house” loads.
I see a complete remodeling in this guy’s future. I hope his insurance covers it.
