Al Jazeera to hit airwaves, but where are the advertisers?
Washington Times ^ | 8/19/13 | Cheryl K. Chumley

Al Jazeera may have a team of 1,000 journalists, a massive budget that expands coverage around the globe and a lofty goal of besting ratings king Fox News — but what it doesn’t have is a solid advertising base.

The New York Postreports that when the network hits the airwaves Tuesday, it will do so with about half the normal cable news channel advertising load. It’ll have about six minutes of commercials per hour, compared to the 12-plus minutes broadcast by rivals Fox, CNN and MSNBC. Of those six minutes of commercials, about half will be in-house.

Al Jazeera says the lack of advertising is a win for watchers, but industry insiders say it is proof positive of the station’s flagging public image.

“I wouldn’t give them a dime, especially since we are in New York,” one advertiser requesting anonymity told the Post. “They’re owned by an Arab country and they ran the [Osama] bin Laden tapes. I just wouldn’t trust them.”

They don’t need advertisers when they have millions pouring in every month from cable-satellite subscribers. Probably something like 15-20 cents a month for each and every one of the 50+ million homes it is already in.

At a minimum its revenue is already guaranteed at $5.5-6 MILLION PER MONTH<, without any advertisers.

MeganC~:” Al Jazeera doesn’t need advertisers. It has sponsors.”

The cable bill that you pay includes Al Jazeera
The cable companies pay the channel to carry them.. Comcast / Time Warner / Brighthouse/ etc., etc..
Individual programs have advertizers .

We’ve been w/out cable for 7 yrs as soon as it crossed $50/mo. Our family discussions, interactions skyrocketed...can anyone deny the porn on BET/VH1/MTV...heck, any station now. Yeah I miss sports, but it is precious on a given Sunday a Fox baseball game comes on...then it isn’t taken for granted.

Dump cable, you won’t regret it.

Its sponsors are cable-satellite TV subscribers who are giving it millions and millions on a monthly basis.

Beheading TV... I mean Bridges-TV, CCTV4 commie channel and the new PIVOT (basically Current-TV with a new name) are all going to rake in millions a month without a single advertiser.

I’m showing it on Direct TV at channel 358. Don’t care to see it.

Don’t need any. It’s bundled into cable like MSNBC. Only way to protest is to drop cable.

Al J doesn’t really need advertising. It is a Saracen propaganda vehicl eand will be supported as much as necessary by the money we send to Arabia for oil and aid.

I wonder if they would accept advertising from beer companies or producers of pork products?

LOL! Ham!

I worked at the Radio Shack in Mission Valley (San Diego) in grad school. The kosher deli next door was a great spot for lunch and convenient. I was floored one afternoon as the shopping center marquee displayed, "Ham it up at the Maven". Good grief.

I’m sure the DeathCare exchanges can advertise there for cheap.

I’ve watched AJE for a few years now too and I find it’s no different than say CNN International or BBC World Service or RT America or France 24 or NHK World Service.

It may be far better at reporting international news stories, but that’s because they have more international bureaus than the US networks do. The only network in this country that comes close to competing with Al-Jazeera on the international front is CNN.

Al-Jazeera America’s stated goal seems to be to report the news going on in this country that is largely being ignored.

You want car chases, watch Fox News. You want breaking news, go to CNN. You want left-winged politics, watch MSNBC. Al-Jazeera’s success will hinder on whether they can fill a void not being filled by the other networks.

From what I am reading Al Jazeera is firmly on the far left politically.
