Black and white silent footage taken during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis have been turned into a mesmerising feature movie with sound and colour.
The film is a riveting account of the fierce house-to-house fighting against the German army that began on August 1 and ended 63 days later with the insurgents surrendering, following the deaths of some 200,000 rebels and residents.
Titled Warsaw Rising, the film shows the crews that the Polish resistance Home Army sent fanning through the city to chronicle the uprising.

The real tragedy was after the war, those who survived the Uprising were treated as criminals by the Communists, many were jailed, some were executed.

The Germans were caught flat-footed by the uprising, with only about 18,000 troops in Warsaw when it began, and many of those were the useless drunks of the Ukrainian RONA, Russians “Volunteers” in German service.
Bronislav Kaminski, commander of S.S. Sturmbrigade R.O.N.A.(The Russian National Liberation Army), was more interested in looting, than putting down the rebellion, and his 2,000 troops quickly turned in to a violent rabble, allowing the rebellion to take hold. His men murdered around 10,000 Polish civilians (mostly non-Jewish) trying to get to the good stuff.
Where Kaminski screwed up was not in letting the rebellion grow, but in not delivering the stolen loot to Himmler, and keeping it. He was executed on Himmler’s orders.
It was not until the butchers of Oskar Dirlewanger’s brigade were pulled from anti-partisan duty and sent in to Warsaw that the rebellion was put down.
There a lots of atrocity stories about German troops that were made-up propaganda, but Dirlewanger was THE REAL DEAL, a complete butcher and pedophile, who got off (literally) on murdering people, and watching them die. This guy, and his men, who were German Army criminals, Russian Criminals, and Ukrainians, were the bloodiest butchers of the East.
The Russians were under orders from Stalin himself to kill them on sight, without mercy.
Meanwhile, the Red Army sat on Warsaw’s doorstep and did nothing while the Germans destroyed Warsaw.
the UK and France went to war over Hitler taking Poland, while 5+ years later, the allies simply gave Poland to Stalin.
Sad fight: Much too little and too late. A lesson for all: Be armed and maintain your strength in weapons, logistics, and personal capabilities.
Yes, my comment was going to be : “thanks 4 all the hard work, guys.....but you are now going to be controlled by the Soviet Union.” I don’t think enough has been written or analyzed about the dynamics o* the way large parts o the world were allocated to Stalin.
Or as I put it, “Germany got The Marshall Plan, while Poland got the Marshall Stalin Plan.”
