Bloomberg’s Public Housing Fingerprinting Idea Stuns, Infuriates Residents
CBS ^ | 16 Aug 13 | Staff

Posted on 08/16/2013 6:58:14 PM PDT by SkyPilot

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s latest crime-fighting idea had a lot of people riled up on Friday.

The mayor wants to fingerprint more than 600,000 people who live in public housing. He said it would be done to make the projects safer.

Bloomberg was responding to questions about Federal Judge Shira Schendlin’s ruling on the stop-and-frisk program when the topic shifted to security and the New York City Housing Authority. Bloomberg said there has to be a way to make the projects safer.

“Five percent of our population lives in NYCHA housing, 20 percent of the crime is in NYCHA housing – numbers like that. And we’ve just got to find some way to keep bringing crime down there. And we have a whole group of police officers assigned to NYCHA housing,” Bloomberg said. “The people that live there, most of them, want more police protection. They want more people. If you have strangers walking in the halls of your apartment building, don’t you want somebody to stop and say, ‘Who are you, why are you here?’”

But residents who live within the confines of NYCHA buildings said the mayor’s fingerprinting idea goes too far.

“That’s like invading someone’s privacy or something. Why you want to fingerprint somebody? It is bad enough you get arrested, you get finger printed, so why you want to fingerprint us? Now Bloomberg needs to get a job. Get out of here already. He’s done. Bloomberg is done,” Chelsea Houses resident Nino Alayon said.

“Why? For what? We live here all these years, I mean, what seems to be the problem? This is not jail,” added Deborah Gatling of the Chelsea Houses.

“I don’t feel that that’s right. Fingerprinted for what?” resident Alberta Hale added.

Such judgmental people on here - there might come a time when some of you who sit in your ivory towers and throw stones will find yourself in the same boat. No wonder people who are having a hard time don’t vote for conservatives. They are scared and from the posts I’ve read on this forum - they should be.

Get a life. I lived in a welfare town for 18 LONG years and saw it all. The program is rife with fraud and corruption.

Welfare needs to be canned completely, plain and simple.

If they want to eat, let them get a job, just like the rest of us.

And as far as the poor little kiddies, well, they don't feed those kids anyway. They go hungry and I've seen it myself, for 18 long years.

If you want to be a government, nanny stater, bleeding heart liberal, hop on over to DU. You'll find the sympathy there that you're looking for.

To throw a little wood on the fire, all women who are getting ANY government money, Pell grants, section 8, WICS EBTS, small business loans, etc, should be required to get abortions if they get pregnant, or lose the benefits they already get! If they could afford a child, then they obviously don’t need government aid.

The problem is actually that the babies are little money makers. They are allowed x number of extra dollars for every kid they pop out

THAT'S why they have the babies.

Cut out subsidizing each child and you'll see the birth rates drop like a rock.

Another thing that would make them safer would be to get rid of public housing altogether.

Great comment. I think we have all had a time or two that things in life became really hard. I know I was down to nothing, not even a car, and; I was used to over 1k plus a week from working my fanny off back in 1980. It was my fault -that I fell on my ass.I felt sorry for me, etc. I had two parents die in 10 months, and; a few other problems. I moved some 100 miles plus away, lived on my insurance renewals, and; I spent $225 for rent. I ate at Wendy’s superbar every damn day for under $4. I walked everywhere or caught a damn bus.It was me who was wrong-not this country or GOV.I believe a person who wants to do something-FINDS A WAY.A person who does not-FINDS AN EXCUSE.

It’s a great idea bloomy. Why stop there? DNA and Retina ID should be required for any and all public assistance. You are a fascist BTW.

Great post. Many of us have been there. I believe it is God who picks us up, for those who want His help. there are literally millions of Americans (and some of them are not even Americans but they squat here, who choose to stay in the dump.

When you accept goodies from the gubmint, this is what will happen. I have no sympathy for these people.

Go Doomberg go!

Best comment of the thread.

BTW, is anyone else having trouble with their account?

I cannot access my ping list. My mail works, I'm logged in, can post comments, etc, but whenever I click on *New Posts to You* it takes me to the forum comments and does not turn off red.

I can understand the outrage of these folks, but I still had to chuckle.

Not because I am mean, but because Bloomberg is different than most lefties. He doesn’t even bother to hide the endgame.

The people who are so upset really do not get that there are, and always have been, invisible meat hooks in them the minute they take what is given to them by the government that was made possible by confiscation from those who do work.

They probably are unable to believe that those freebies they love so much do not give them respect. They are owned and totally dependent.

They day is coming quickly where the meat hooks will be very visible. They will do as they are told or lose the goodies from Uncle Sugar.

The government can take away as easily as they hand it out.

Bloomberg just cuts to the chase. I guess that is good in a way, at least people know what to expect! LOL

Someone who is unsympathetic to the plight of others and wraps it in a conservative blanket deserves to be on DU - that means you! I’ve seen it all too, and apparently, we have both seen the good and the bad. Yes, there is fraud, but what program doesn’t have some fraud connected to it? Even corporations have fraud.

I suggest you adopt oh say about 4 families and buy their groceries for them for a year, if you are so charitable. Which I know that you aren’t.

Government is the least effective and least efficient means of helping the poor, I would reckon that at least HALF of all welfare dollars go to the bureaucracy instead of the poor.

Really? I’ve been contributing from my paychecks for over 25 years for these, and will have to contribute for another 25 to collect.

I will never understand those that say those are “entitlements” after you have paid into them, and that you don’t deserve and shouldn’t get so much as a penny of that money back.

Bloomberg very CLEARLY depicts what "out of touch" means in relation to the American public and its so called leaders.

Yup. If they were suddenly out of money and their bellies were empty, they would be filing for those programs as fast as they could. More than a few FReepers match any DUer when it comes to hatred and cruelty. Only difference is those FReepers brag about what great followers of Jesus they are.
