If discount every-day necessities can’t tempt shoppers into stores, it’s a clear signal that consumers feel stifled by a tough economy at home and overseas.
That’s the picture provided this morning by Wal-Mart’s latest quarterly report. The world’s largest retailer cut its annual profit and revenue outlook and reported second-quarter figures that missed expectations.
Wal-Mart, operating 10,800 stores across 27 countries, is seen as an economic bellwether because it’s a go-to spot for so many households, where they shop for groceries, home supplies and gasoline. Nonexistent wage gains and a sluggish recovery are hampering spending in America and Europe, while slowing growth in developing companies keep the emerging middle classes there from spending much, too. Listen to Wal-Mart CFO Charles Holley: “”The retail environment remains challenging in the U.S. and our international markets, as customers are cautious in their spending.”(continued)

Keep in mind, Wal Mart is also the largest retailer of food.

A few years ago, during the start of the recession, Walmart was poised to increase sales because middle class shoppers were switching from higher end retailers to Walmart. Now, even Walmart is expensive for the middle class.

If you are a smart shopper Walmart is NOT the place to shop and people are starting to catch on .
You can do much better by shopping sales at most grocery stores and plan your meals according to seasonal sales rather than shopping Walmart for their everyday low prices and not have to put with Walmarts terrible service and obnoxious cashiers .
(especially true if you live in a small town since Walmart charges MUCH higher prices in their small town locations than they do in bigger cities)

A huge problem is that the continuing instability of the world economy—breathlessly reported by the mass media around the world—is literally scaring people into closing their pocketbooks. As such, this affecting Walmart sales does not surprise me.

We do, too, and sometimes more than once a week because they keep getting new stuff. Kind of aggravating though. They keep having new things and so I buy one to try out. When I go back later, they don’t have any more and may not get any more.
what I did find though are the best ever gingersnaps. $1.00 for a good sized bag and they are baked right in Abilene, Texas. Probably have enough in my Obama stash closet to feed the whole neighborhood for a year. And they have great frozen waffles - 9 for $1.00. Grandsons love them with some of the $1.00 a bottle maple syrup on top.
Just really hard to beat.

Walmarts “not every day low price” items are higher than most stores.

i avoid the place if at all posible, can’t stand them or the low end trash that shops there!
Walmart is running a scam. Got most of my canned food preps from specials in grocery stores. People must be on to them.
I feel the same way.....the prices are not worth the headache of putting up the the dregs of society.
