UNDATED (CNN) - Feel guilty when you leave your dog home alone? Well, now canines nationwide have their own TV channel to keep them company.

After a successful test marketing, "Dog TV" launched this month nationwide.

It's happening through Direct TV and its target demographic is our furry friends.

The creators say they did three years of research on dog behavior, watching video from surveillance cameras set up in 38 apartments to see what dogs do when they're alone and how they react to TV.

I think the research you saw is baloney. My Jack Russel, before he went blind, would only fetch his red ball. He had 3 balls all exactly alike, those little ones with feet you get at the pet store. He would only fetch the red one.

I had a Lab who knew his toys by color, had several Kongs, blue, red and yellow. He’d get the right one when asked. If they’re “colorblind” they’re able to distinguish via some other means, scent, taste.

Given the dog’s sense of smell, there could other reasons why a red ball was his favorite. My dog loves red apples and hates green ones. It is the sweetness vs. the tartness and he can smell that in an intact apple. OTOH, his favorite toys are either green or blue and he has a bias towards anything that rolls. The toys that retain scent are always his choice when it comes to settling in for a good chew.

The research was anatomically based. They charted cones and rods in the retina. It was all done with imaging, discounting the dog’s reactions to specific items. I tend to accept it.

I still am in doubt because when I threw him a green ball or a yellow one, he would start after it and then turn around and refuse to bring it back to me. He didn’t get close enough to smell or taste it. Now that my little guy is totally blind, he doesn’t play ball anymore but his sense of smell and hearing have improved tremendously.

Worthless. Slightly more entertaining for humans than dogs.

Seriously, some dogs are actually attracted to TV. Many could not care less. I think cats like TV more. Of the dogs and cats we’ve had and known, more cats paid attention than dogs.

Dogs are red blind. They have 2-color vision, blue and yellow.

Colorful toys are for humans. I first learned of dog vision because my dog loves Aerobie Dogobie frisbees, which explained they only make yellow and blue Dogobies for dogs’ abilities.

It could simply be he likes the SHADE he sees with the red. The red probably looks different from the other colors, a gray perhaps, and he likes that better.

Or, when did you buy them? What order? Same store?

I bought the red one first and when it got lost for a while I bought the others. They were all exactly the same size and type except the color. I thought he would be happy to play ball again when I bought the green one, but no dice!

Doesn’t mean they can’t see the item, just that it doesn’t look like a vibrant color. To them it is probably more gray. If you are colorblind, it doesn’t matter what a color looks like to most normal people. Only that you are conditioned what is red, even if to normal people that would be gray. My husband is also colorblind but he understands what “red” is, even if he doesn’t see it as we do.

He likes the comfortable old one. His scent is all over it and he remembers it best.

I’ve seen it on Animal Planet’s show Too Cute!. In one episode female French Bulldog would sit in front of the TV and watch intently at the screen.

My Chihuahua does not seem to be interested in anything on TV. When he hears barking, he will return the barking.

Animal Planet is great..I watch the puppies halftime show during the Super Bowl every year its ADORABLE..Nemo is more of a barker than Maxie..Nemo is half Maltese/Half Pomeranian, I think he has the Pomeranian attitude in him LOL he barks at EVERYTHING, especially skateboarders, I think he’s prejudice against bicyclists and skateboarders he hates those things lol..but funny thing is after he barks at them like crazy like he wants to kill them, he will cry like he wants some pets..silly dogs, cant figure em out

what channel did they dump to make space for this?

Hopefully one of the infomercial or shopping channels that they inundate us with to justify rate increases.
