Walmart Needles The Nation About Low-Wage Intern Jobs, Hilarity Ensues
Reason ^ | August 8, 2013 | Katherine Mangu-Ward

Jobs at Walmart don't pay a lot. Someone at The Nation recently noticed this, and decided to make up a new hourly wage for workers at the mega-uber-superstore chain—$12/hour—and declare their desire to see this wage implemented in an open letter to the CEO.

The retail company has issued reams of press releases, funded and touted economic studies, taken to the airwaves, and made other serious efforts to address the criticisms about their compensation practices over the years.

But it looks like someone in Bentonville finally snapped: Steven Restivo, a Walmart senior director of communications, sent out a email yesterday with the subject line: “people who live in glass houses…”

The Nation—“America’s leading progressive print and online magazine”—recently encouraged its readers to sign an open letter demanding that Walmart increase wages to $12/hour and this article called our company one of the “biggest abusers of low-wage labor.”

In an ironic twist, ProPublica recently reported that starting this fall, “interns at the Nation Institute will be paid minimum wage for the first time in the history of the 30-year-old program.” As ProPublica noted, The Nation has been paying its full-time interns a weekly stipend of $150 per week—less than the current federal minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour.

I get so tired of these attacks against Walmart. If people don’t like what they pay, quit. I hear that Obama has this economy rockin’ so there should be plenty of alternatives.

Great response by Walmart.

They would all be making more money if the neo-aristocrats weren’t flooding the market with illegal immigrants and low-skill legal immigrants.

BUMP for Wal-Mart.

Isn’t the prevailing wage in “journalism” a bit higher than $7.25 an hour?

The Reason magazine will give its interns a significant raise and begin paying 7.25/hour this fall [ie less than Wal mart's avg wage pf 8.18/hr] and the fellow who runs the internship program noticed something about the increased wage:

“We are not yet certain how this will work out long term, but for the fall we are anticipating hiring ten interns rather than twelve.”

LOL

I don’t think Walmart’s response was silly at all. But maybe I’m just too stupid to see what Reason sees. Yeah, that’s it.

Walmart is the victim of "demagoguery by definition" at the hands of the ruling cognoscenti.

They've regulated all the good paying jobs out of the country to satisfy their "arts community" sponsors, so they try to mandate entry level / crap jobs pay like the ones they ran off, and the people that vote for them are too ignorant to understand the dynamic.

No. MSM news readers and news creators are paid $7.25 an hour; however, if they toe the Progressive line the His Arrogance funnels contracts to the major MSM organizations for propaganda and each MSM news reader or creator is subsidized to bring the wages up to a minimum of $500 an hour plus bonuses and perks such as kissing His Arrogance’s muslim ring.

"The Nation has been paying its full time interns a stipend of $150 per week-less than the current federal minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour

Toward the end of the article it says they will try this new policy out, but, that they will only be hiring 10 rather than their usual 12 interns.

BWAAAHAHAHAHAHA HA!!!!

You just can't make this stuff up.

Hypocrite: (definition) See liberal, democrat.

The Nation has been paying its full-time interns a weekly stipend of $150 per week—less than the current federal minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour.

On another thread yesterday someone (I wish I could cite who) stated that the reason for the zero or sub-minimum wage pay was to insure that the internships go to trust fund kids of the proper family background who don't need to be paid, rather than people struggling to get a job. People who need a job don't have or need the "proper" connections.

Which may be why in engineering internships I got paid twice or more the minimum wage. They didn't care about connections, they cared about having someone with technical skills doing some of the scut work to let the professionals focus on the high end work.

Raise the import tariffs.

Wal-mart will sell American made goods again once they are cheaper than imports.
