US warns citizens to leave Yemen amid terror alert
BBC News ^ | 6 August 2013

Posted on 08/06/2013 1:47:22 AM PDT by Lonely Bull

The US State Department has ordered citizens and non-emergency government staff to leave Yemen "immediately" due to security threats.

--SNIP--

The BBC's Abdullah Ghorab, in Sanaa, says the Yemeni capital has been experiencing unprecedented security measures, with hundreds of armoured military vehicles deployed to secure the presidential palace, vital infrastructural buildings and Westerns embassies in the capital.

Our correspondent says that a security source confirmed Yemeni intelligence services had discovered that tens of al-Qaeda members had arrived in Sanaa over the past few days from other regions in preparation for the implementation of a large plot.

The source described the plot as dangerous, and suggested it was to include explosions and suicide attacks aimed at Western ambassadors and foreign embassies in Yemen, in addition to operations aimed at the Yemeni military headquarters.

I’m trying really hard you figure out why any sane American citizen would place themselves in Yemen, ever. I lost interest is going just about any place outside CONTUS since 9/11/01. But if I were to venture yonder ... Yemen? If they are there voluntarily, do we really want them back?

“Al Qaeda intercept is just one piece of threat intelligence: U.S. sources”

By Tabassum Zakaria and Susan Cornwell
WASHINGTON | Mon Aug 5, 2013 7:42pm EDT

SNIPPET: “Yemen’s embassy in Washington issued a statement listing 25 “most wanted terrorists” it said were planning to carry out operations in its capital Sanaa, and said it was offering a reward for information leading to their capture.”

I know you didn’t ask me the question, but I’m glad you asked.

Others like you who may not follow terrorism closely, are not aware that what happens “over there” can and often does affect us here.

1 example: 9/11/01.

At the same time, John Kerry and Barack Obama are coercing Israelis to surrender defensive land barriers to Hamas and PLO terrorists!

Before 9/11/01 I may have agreed with you. I knew little about the globe, and really only cared about my career. Oh I am well aware ever since that dreadful day. That’s why I do pay attention, every day since. Just sayin’ no one could pay me enough to be in Yemen, ever and I can’t understand anyone from here putting themselves there and having to heed this warning from State.

“Al Qaeda Threat: Officials Fear ‘Ingenious’ Liquid Explosive”

By RHONDA SCHWARTZ (@rhondaABC) and JAMES GORDON MEEK (@meekwire)
Aug 5, 2013, 8:57 PM

SNIPPET: “The officials said the new technique is believed to have been developed by the Yemen-based al Qaeda affiliate al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), home to notorious alleged bomb maker Ibrahim al-Asiri. Al-Asiri is suspected of being the mastermind behind several devious explosive devices including the underwear bomb and surgically implanted body bombs.

Al-Asiri was listed today among Yemen’s 25 top terrorists, who the Yemeni government said were planning to carry out operations in the capital, Sana’a. The Yemeni government is offering 5 million Yemeni rials, or $23,000, for information leading to the capture of any of the terrorists.”

SNIPPET: “In addition to the new liquid bomb, a U.S. official said American spy agencies are concerned the attack could use what some call “Frankenbombers,” suicide bombers who could carry an improvised explosive device sewn into their body cavity.

Sunday on “This Week,” Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-MD — the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee — said the intercepted communications called for a “major attack.””

“So, is al Qaeda still defeated?”
By BILL ROGGIO

August 5, 2013 12:55 AM

SNIPPET: “Thomas was quoted extensively at The Jerusalem Post on this very issue over the weekend.

Here is an excerpt from the report:

Joscelyn, a terrorism analyst specializing in al-Qaida and a senior editor of The Long War Journal as well as a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies told The Jerusalem Post in an interview on Sunday said that many people in the US have been trying to argue that al-Qaida is dead, but this news demonstrates that this was not a correct assessment.

Recent reports indicate that the intelligence that led to the warning was above the level of general chatter and that it coincides with the naming of a new al-Qaida general manager.

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri, according to a report by CNN on Saturday, appointed Nasir al Wuhayshi, the Yemeni leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), for the role. Consequently, Wuhayshi rose to number two in the terrorist organization, a position held by Libyan Abu Yahya al Libi before his death in a drone strike in Pakistan in June 2012.

The report states that the move could be meant to help the organization remain focused in the Arab world and raise funds from Gulf States. Wuhayshi previously was Bin Laden’s private secretary during the latter’s time in Afghanistan, fleeing to Iran, where he was arrested and sent to Yemen in 2003.

Joscelyn says that this position is incredibly important because it “manages infrastructure and affiliates.” It could be that “this plot is tied to his appointment as a big coming out party,” he said.”

“AQAP’s emir also serves as al Qaeda’s general manager”
By THOMAS JOSCELYN & BILL ROGGIO
August 6, 2013

SNIPPET: “Al Wuhayshi served as Osama bin Laden’s aide-de-camp from the late 1990s until after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and was with the al Qaeda master at the battle of Tora Bora. Al Wuhayshi fled to Iran, where he was eventually detained and deported to Yemen in 2003. Bin Laden’s protégé escaped from prison in 2006 along with other jihadists who rebuilt al Qaeda’s presence inside Yemen.

After his escape from prison, al Wuhayshi quickly established himself as al Qaeda’s top man in Yemen. In November 2008, Ayman al Zawahiri publicly recognized him as al Qaeda’s emir in Yemen. A few months later, in January 2009, al Wuhayshi announced that he was now the leader of AQAP, an al Qaeda affiliate that orchestrates the organizations’s activities in both Saudi Arabia and Yemen and quickly began targeting the West.”

SNIPPET: “Al Wuhayshi is especially well-positioned to coordinate the activities of al Qaeda’s robust affiliates in the heart of the Middle East and Africa. And given AQAP’s plotting against the US homeland, al Wuhayshi is an ideal candidate to make sure that the regional affiliates continue to devote some of their assets to targeting the West — just as bin Laden specified in his letter to Atiyah.”

I suspect that most, if not all of the jobs listed are paid for by US taxpayers. One clue is that the very first job is “Consultancy Gender Program Partners.” After spending 9 hours this week looking for jobs and finding none to apply for I applied for a job in Saudi Arabia.

My expertise is in running big military projects. We don’t do much development overseas. The stuff is built here and sold via FMS or foreign military sales. That’s the foreign aid you keep reading about. FMS is really corporate welfare. Most of the military’s don’t really need what we give them. They need training and loyal troops and basic guns, not rockets and jamming equipment.

“Report: Al Qaeda conference call led to US diplomatic closures”

By THOMAS JOSCELYN & BILL ROGGIO
August 7, 2013 1:35 PM

Earlier this week, the press learned that an intercepted communication between al Qaeda honcho Ayman al Zawahiri and Nasir al Wuhayshi, who heads al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and is now al Qaeda’s overall general manager, is what caused the US government to shutter more than 20 diplomatic facilities.

Is there more to this story? Writing for the Daily Beast, Eli Lake and Josh Rogin report that the conference call included “more than 20 al Qaeda operatives.””
