Bill Maher: Get rid of the Department of Homeland Security
Daily Caller ^ | August 3, 2013 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 08/03/2013 10:17:08 PM PDT by grundle

HBO’s Bill Maher thinks the Department of Homeland Security has outlived its usefulness.

On Friday’s episode of “Real Time,” Maher and his guests debated the DHS’s usefulness during a discussion of the debate between Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul and New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie.

“There was a huge verbal slap by the Republican Party this week between Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, and Rand Paul,” Maher said. “And it was sort of I think a fight for the soul of the Republican Party — where they’re going to go because, OK, next month is the 12th anniversary of 9/11. Some people in the Republican Party are saying let’s move on. That’s Rand Paul. He is saying, you know, we spy on each other too much. We spend too much on defense. So Chris Christie is from the neocon-wing, fired back and said come to New Jersey and tell that to the widows and orphans. He played that Giuliani card, which I think is sleazy. And then Rand Paul made a fat joke. But who’s going to win this battle is my question to this panel in the Republican Party?”

Later in that segment, Maher suggested just eliminating the Department of Homeland Security.

“Do you think we could get rid of the Department of Homeland Security?” Maher said. “This is one of those monstrosities that came out of 9/11. It has, I think, 240,000 regular employees. Janet Napolitano quit at the top. The top 15 jobs there are vacant because no one wants to work there. It’s thankless because some shit is going to happen and it’s mostly luck whether or not you’re there when it happens. You can’t stop everything. No one wants the job. Why don’t we just get rid of it?”

We all know it is impossible to get rid of a federal agency once it is created. We are stuck with it, good or bad.

I’m really sick of giving Bill Maher a moment of my time. When did this guy become a political commentator of any value? He’s like Karl Rove.

the problem with liberals like Maher is that most of them were raised by and educated by liberals who never had to actually work as a productive member of society...so they have no understanding what happens when you react to some potential threat by creating another government monstrosity that is filled with others like them who have no practical knowledge how to logically address, analyze and solve problems. Just another turd in the sewer of liberalism!!

Devotees of Meher et al are all Twitter/Facebook/Instagram generations. They can't live with out letting every one know where they are and what they are doing/thinking.

So why be unhappy with Homeland Security and that sort? You punks voted for personal intrusion when you twice voted for The Fascist in Chief.

Bill ands kids, get lots of K-Y jelly. That's the government you voted and support. Now bend over and take it.

I would never have believed I could agree with Maher on anything but this proves me wrong.

Of course doing away with any federal agency is a pipe dream, but MLK isn’t the only who can dream.

I think Bill-M is a festering dunghill of ignorance and biased depravity....but he is 100% correct on this matter.

Let's can the DHS.

It is leaderless and dispersed enough that the repercussions would be minimal.

Honestly... The only real problem with the DHS is the name. The name sucks. The idea to reorg things like customs, border patrol, immigration, and the Coast Guard under the same roof makes a lot if intuitive sense. The DHS isn’t so much a new agency as it is the reorganization of already-existing agencies. Having the Coast Guard in Transportation never made any sense. Why should immigration and customs be under different banners? It makes sense that they are all together.

But... The name really blows. Gotta work on that.

I detest him also, but I believe this is the third "moment of clarity" he has had in recent months. Maybe if he strings a few more together, he'll start to see the light.

They themselves don't even know what they're supposed to do.

Remember when they seized websites that were merely accused of putting up links to torrent sites? WTF???

Homeland Security Seized site
Look at the site I linked above. Simply seized by the DHS.

Agree. The Bible says there is a time for all seasons. The season of Homeland Security is past. Ugh. Maher is right.

Bill Maher is occasionally right, almost always for the wrong reasons.

Maher remains on the “Mussolini action list”, should CWII commence.

Get rid of ALL the departments down to the original four and do not retain ANY of the personnel. It might just give the country back its future.
