LOS ANGELES Three million Time Warner Cable customers in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas are losing the CBS channel, as the cable provider says it is dropping the network in a dispute over fees.

I thought there was a requirement that cable systems carry local channels. Not so much federal law but a local requirement by municipalities for the company to continue to operate its franchise in the town, city, county...
Good thinking, Time Warner. Pull the plug in August when CBS’ already pathetic show lineup is in re-runs. Nobody will notice.

The dirty little secret is your grandpa’s old TV antenna works too. HD Antennas are nothing new but the manufacturers want you to think so.
My Cox Cable and an area CBS station got into a similar squabble just a month or so ago.
The station was claiming Cox was not willing to pay enough. Cox was claiming the station wanted too much.
Well, miraculously, just hours before the deadline, they reached an agreement.
Ironically, similar situations have occurred with other stations and the cable company in the past. It is a recurring tactic.
“HD antenna” is a marketing term. The signals are still broadcast over VHF or UHF, so any good antenna that picks up those bands will work.

Get an outdoor tv antenna...you won’t need a booster
Because some customers are not even aware you can watch (for free, with an antenna & converter) the 3 major networks & maybe the CW & PBS.
I was in the NY media market last week. The ads by CBS were endless, warning of the END OF THE WORLD if TW didn’t renew them. The ads featured CBS shows the NYC audience just could not live without. I personally don’t watch TV, but if I did,there wasn’t anything beyond NCIS that I could even imagine missing.
“Must Carry” is a Federal law, upheld by SCOTUS. “Must carry” is a privilege granted to the local stations, not the other way around, and stations can charge the cable companies for their content. This story is about a CBS owned station wanting more money that the provider is willing to pay, and the provider cannot replace the CBS content from anywhere else.
“Must carry” prevents the cable company from simply using the signal from a CBS affiliate in another market and piping it into the NY homes. The rule makes sense for the local TV broadcasters in smaller markets. Their advertising revenue would shrink to nothing if their commercials weren’t being seen.
If the frequency is the same, the antenna used will have the same optimal design. Very true. I have no idea if the new TV frequencies are the same, but UHF and VHF do require different designs for best reception, so I hope it’s not still both.

What makes this case unique is the CBS affiliate in question is CBS owned and operated. They can afford to subsidize the station if the bottom drops out of the ad revenues, so they can afford to play hardball with Times Warner. This will be an interesting battle to watch, although it’s just academic to us folks in flyover land. Our stations can’t afford this fight.
Correct .. it still comes down to VHF / UHF. During the conversion the bulk of the stations affected were probably on a VHF channel and started digital broadcasts on UHF at reduced power. I had to install a better UHF antenna to receive the broadcasts. Once the conversion was complete some stations switched back to a VHF frequency, some stayed on UHF.
We dropped DISH two years ago. Have TV hooked to computer and rabbit ears. I like the programming I get now better.
