Archeologists conducting excavations at the site of a church in Turkey have unearthed a stone chest containing a relic that may be part of the cross on which Jesus was crucified.
The items were discovered during a large-scale excavation at the Balatlar Church, which was built in A.D. 660 near the Black Sea, Today's Zaman reported.
Professor Gülgün Köroğlu, an associate professor at Turkey's Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and excavation leader, told the newspaper the artifacts are linked to Jesus' crucifixion.

Wearing a reminder of what Jesus went through is not an act of worship. It is a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice. This does not constitute worship. it helps a person stay recollected because there are many distractions in modern life.

In 348 A.D., St Helen learned that relics from Calvary were being held near Jerusalem. She went there and brought back some artifacts. The relics are in a very old church built to house them in Rome. The original church columns (still in use) have been dated to 400 A.D.
The relics include a purported thorn from the Crown, two pieces of the Holy Cross, a nail from the Cross, and a piece of the Cross of the Good Thief. Also, a piece of wood believed to be half of the marker from the top of the Cross was found hidden in a wall in the church in 1492. The inscription on the wood is very interesting.
The name of the church is Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. The photos on the net are impressive too, but seeing those things in person is very moving, whatever their provenance. This church is one of my favorite stops in Rome. There is also a full-length backlit replica of the Shroud of Turin in this church. It is stunning.

Conflicting with this is the finding of Charles Rohault de Fleury, who, in his Mémoire sur les instruments de la Passion 1870 made a study of the relics in reference to the criticisms of Calvin and Erasmus. He drew up a catalogue of all known relics of the True Cross showing that, in spite of what various authors have claimed, the fragments of the Cross brought together again would not reach one-third that of a cross which has been supposed to have been three or four meters in height, with transverse branch of two meters wide, proportions not at all abnormal. He calculated: supposing the Cross to have been of pine-wood (based on his microscopic analysis of the fragments) and giving it a weight of about seventy-five kilograms, we find the original volume of the cross to be 0.178 cubic meters. The total known volume of known relics of the True Cross, according to his catalogue, amounts to approximately 0.004 cubic meters (more specifically 3,942,000 cubic millimeters), leaving a volume of 0.174 cubic meters lost, destroyed, or otherwise unaccounted for.

The Shroud of Turin sure was kept in mighty good condition. I am a skeptical person but have learned of nothing which proves it is fake. Quite the contrary, especially with the most recent study by those bending over backwards to prove it’s fake but couldn’t.
