That is the result of trying to replace God’s role in soceity with government.
Satan created Socialism/Communism (Statism) for the diehard atheists, and he created Islam for the diehard theists, especially monotheists.
Fascism’s economic structure was called “Third Position”. Unlike capitalism (market control of the economy with production in private hands) and Marxist-Leninism/Communism (government control of the economy and ownership of production) Third Position is a command economy (gvt in control) where production remains in private (preferably large conglomerate) hands.
People saw Third Position as much preferable to Marxist-Leninism/Soviet Communism ... Which is a reason why Fascism was deemed acceptable and groups like the Nazis were able to appropriate the term Socialism to help generate appeal.

Whether it be Nazi, Communism, Islam, or any other “ism” or murderous regimes of any stripe. It ‘s playing footsie with dictators shouldn't come to surprise to anyone that it seek to protect it's markets in Nazi Germany.
Even Jewish top Hollywood executives ignored their Jewish Brothers as they were herded into concentration camps..
Even today “Brave” Hollywood who staunch portrays itself as “boldly representing freedom of expression against “moralist bluenoses” in this country, kowtows to Communist China as we speak as it allows Chinese censors approve scripts today as evidence in films such as Red Dawn and World War Z.

To the studios in those days, movies were a commodity like toothpaste. If the foreign market demands that you make it green, you make it green. We're here to make money.
I am pretty sure I dislike Hollyweirdos as much as anybody and more than most. However, there is no reason that they should have known that the Nazis were the next big Evil. They were just another customer, just like the Soviets. Hollyweird sucks up to anybody with power, money, and charisma. .
What really sucks, though, is how they are sucking up the Chinese, when they SHOULD know that the PRC is the next big Evil.

Back then it looked like the alternates were Fascism and Communism. They simply were simply choosing sides (or, given the investments in the Soviet Union, hedging their bets).

No the choices were NEVER just socialism or fascism.....the choices were freedom or slavery. The same is still true today. Yielding liberty for security....always a dangerous thing to do
