Dannon criticized for using insect-based dye in yogurt products
FoxNews ^ | July 25, 2013 | FoxNews

According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) – a nonprofit food watchdog group – Dannon uses an ingredient known as carmine to give some of its fruit-flavored yogurt a pink color.

Around 40,000 cochineal bugs are needed to produce just one pound of cochineal extract for the carminic acid, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization. In order to obtain the substance, the insects’ bodies are dried and then boiled in water.

The CSPI argued that Dannon's use of carmine is cheating consumers, who believe that fruits are providing their yogurt’s color. They also maintain that numerous studies have found that the insect-based dye can put some people at risk for allergic reactions and even anaphylactic shock.

Center for Science in the Public Interest?

My spidey sense suspect ties to George Soros.

These are organic insects, right? What's the problem? This is a natural product. About as natural it gets. Dannon for me.

Beware of hype over nothing?

We eat things that come from hen butts and drink glandular secretions from cows. As it is, much of our food has an allowable amount of insect parts anyway.

I’m okay with it. I’m okay with the insects. I know where eggs come from. I’ve milked goats before. None of this bothers me. I may be reduced to eating things a lot less desirable if Obama gets his way.

So? As long as they disclose on the label and don’t claim it’s Kosher, I fail to see the problem.

It’s in Skittles and Good’n’Plenty.

Rattlesnake venom is a natural, organic substance. Feathers are high in protein. Insects are mostly fattening, if you eat them raw. But first you need to shuck them (take the chitinous outer covering off). Man does not have a chitinase, an enzyme that will break down this hard (crunchy) covering.

So some diet pills have a chitin basis because it fills you up and yet you can't digest it. Diet pills are the products of libtards.

The center for science in the public interest looks pretty left leaning to me.

Food industry’s sodium reduction efforts have failed, and scientists are calling for mandatory, phased-in limits on salt in food to prevent cardiovascular disease.<<

cochineal

Been used for years in products. At least they don't use red lead or copper compounds to color their products.

Insect-based dye is an strong aphrodesiac. It also promotes heart health and improves eyesight.

I see they’re worried about “food environments” (Food Deserts). They also have a whole string of pending lawsuits against food and drug companies.

I’m a lot more threatened by these idiots than I am a few bugs.

What’s the gripe? The UN has stated that everyone, except the elite, eat bugs and insects. I would assume bug extract would qualify.

As a source of red dye, cochineal has a long history in the new world...it was in fact, the source or red in British uniforms at the time of the War for Independence.
