Mysterious hum driving people crazy around the world
nbcnews ^ | 26 Jul 2013 | Marc Lallanilla

It creeps in slowly in the dark of night, and once inside, it almost never goes away.

It's known as the Hum, a steady, droning sound that's heard in places as disparate as Taos, N.M.; Bristol, England; and Largs, Scotland.

But what causes the Hum, and why it only affects a small percentage of the population in certain areas, remain a mystery, despite a number of scientific investigations...

I think it depends on whether you can hear low-frequency sounds; obviously, your daughter can hear it clearly.

I’ve heard it myself in Taos - I was with two friends, only one of whom could hear it along with me. The one who couldn’t hear it thought we’d lost it, but both of us heard it quite clearly. There’s a similar noise here in the eastern Czech Republic, though it’s not always easy to hear, as there’s a small commercial airport nearby, but if you go into the surrounding forests - we’re near the Western Carpathians - you can hear it on a quiet night. It’s audible provided you can hear low frequencies.

Yeah, I’ll bet a lot of these reports involve trains, hills and bedrock.

The surrounding hills can deflect and absorb the train sounds, the granite could connect the low-freqs to the ground, where it could travel and radiate.

Is there a random electronic noise on that video? I don’t hear the hum but it sounds as if the recording equipment isn’t good.

I, my self, have pretty good hearing and while not loud or obtrusive almost everything hums: Computers, refrigerators, ventilation fans, trucks on the highway a mile away, power lines etc. Civilization just downright hums. Even lights make noise ( turn on a set of fluorescent lights on a cold day); I can hear from 20’ away in my office, if my wife turns on the lights in the kitchen, assuming there isn’t any noise to block it.

The only time it’s ever quite is when you are out in the country a long ways from the roads. Even then they seem to be planes passing overhead it feels like your in Lonely are the Brave.

That said I don’t know what these people are talking about maybe nature wants to get in on the act.

Ear noise, I have heard this for years. Like a truck on the highway but it never passes your house. We heard the voices too, finally figured out it was the a/c. Sometimes it sounded like ghostly music but a new a/c unit fixed that, back to just voices. :D

Observe the wildlife. If the sound does not seem to draw their attention, ignore it. It belongs there.

I could hear it.

There were 2 sounds. One was the low hum and the other sort of sounded like distorted telegraph or radio tuner.
