Russia gives Snowden pass to leave airport

RUSSIA'S migration service has provided fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden with a document that allows him to leave the Moscow airport transit zone where he has been holed up for the past month, the RIA Novosti news agency says.

The document confirms that his application for asylum is being considered, but allows Snowden to cross the Russian border so long as border guards do not object, it said on Wednesday.

The Interfax news agency said Snowden could leave the airport in the "next hours".

The Interfax news agency added that the document was initially given to the lawyer helping him, Anatoly Kucherena, who was now on his way to Sheremetyevo airport and about to arrive.

"The American is currently getting ready to leave. He is being provided with new clothes," Interfax said.

I guess Kerry, McCain, and Graham flapping their gums wasn’t such a good idea.

That's a weird condition.

I agree. Maybe it provides diplomatic cover.....Russia is not allowing Snowden to leave but some anonymous border guard will make that decision leaving them free of having made a decision that will thwart US will causing a bigger diplomatic row.

What I find interesting is the fact that Russia even cares whether they cause that row or not.

>>That’s a weird condition.<<

It is a pretty legitimate condition. Migration service may find a person formally worthy of asylum but one may have a kiddie porn, a kilo of drugs and a nuclear material on him. A border guards’ job is to make sure that refugees won’t bring things like that into a country.

Well, I thought he was talking about Russian border guards letting him OUT.

Ok, that is interesting. I was only looking at it from the side of the Russian border guards not the country he would be crossing into.

So much of this reminds me of scenes from”The Terminal” like when Tom Hanks gets to leave the airport etc.

Graham wants to get back at the Russians by boycotting the Olympics. Great idea. Make the Russians mad by allowing them to win more medals at the Olympics. Yeah. That will tell them.

Should he end up getting asylum and ends up living in Russia - he just may find himself living in a country with more freedoms than we currently have - or will, it seems, in the near future. It might be time to start learning Russian - Certainly, right about now, I'd pefer to have a Putin, who loves his country, in charge.

Yeah. That worked out well in 1980 when "Jimmah" boycotted the Olympics.

All it did was, as you say, allow more room for more medals for Russia - but, worse, deep-sixed the careers of many of OUR athletes.

Do we ever learn?

an aside: I still have a cute little Misha Bear, the Russian 1980's mascot -
