Dogs break into Douglas County home, kill two cats and chase woman

A Douglas County family was dealing with the violent deaths of their two cats Saturday after two dogs broke into their home, killed their two pets and tried to attack the wife.

The dogs came from a neighboring house Saturday morning and broke through a second story screen door of Patrick Vermilya’s home. Once inside, they killed one cat sitting on the screen porch, then went further into the home and killed a cat inside, according to Vermilya, who was not at home at the time.

Patty McMahon, Vermilya’s wife, came inside the house and saw the cats lying in pools of blood. Then she turned around and saw the dogs running after her, Vermilya told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“She thought the dogs were going to kill her,” Vermilya said.

She ran and hid in a bathroom and called Vermilya, who called 911, he said.

After 10 minutes, his wife thought the dogs were gone, but as she walked out of the bathroom, the dogs chased her again. She ran outside, locking the dogs in the house, Vermilya said.

Animal control came and captured the dogs, said Douglas County sheriff’s Major Tommy Wheeler

The couple had owned the cats, Lucy and Oscar, for more than 10 years.

“We don’t have any children and these were our kids,” Vermilya said.

He said he can’t believe that the dogs broke into the house to kill the cats.

“To have the animals come inside the house blows my mind,” he said. “The cop said in his 15 years he had never seen dogs break into a porch and house.”

The dogs were taken to the Douglas County Animal Control building and will be euthanized, Wheeler said.

The dog owners were given citations and will appear in court, Wheeler said.

Not mentioned in the article, but mentioned on the news was the observation that the dogs were pit bull mixes

I'm sure the cats did something to provoke the dogs < /sarcasm> Or at least the dog lovers on this forum will say so or "It was the owners fault" Legally absolutely true, and from the perspective that they had not one but two of a vicious breed also the owners' fault. But the breed remains a danger irrespective of the way they're treated. With memories of Chet66

Oh and BTW I'd say that they didn't TRY to attack the wife they DID attack the wife. They just weren't successful.

Amish dogs?

Not known. The media was very careful NOT to give any hints about the identity of the dog owners, so I'd guess that, yes they were Amish. Whites would have had their pictures and address posted.

The dogs are to be euthanized. Too bad the same can’t be said of the owners.

The Bumpuses were white hillbillies in the original story.

I doubt there are white hillbillies involved in this incident.

Yes, it is usually toy poodles and chihuahuas that do this sort of thing.

With all the cops-shooting-peoples’-dogs stories around, you’d think this situation would have been a great opportunity for them.

So it took much longer than 10 minutes for someone in government to come and rescue this woman.

I’m sure a couple of dogs could kill a person in a much shorter timeframe.

Well the difference is that the dogs in this story really needed shooting and weren't on the owner's property. It's only fun if you can shoot someone's pet dog for no reason other than it feels good (but not as good as it feels to shoot the owner.)

They could if she hadn't managed to get into the bathroom and lock the door. My house theoretically (if I hadn't lost all of my firearms while fishing) would have a loaded weapon in every room.

I had a neighbor who bred dogs like this. He moved away.
