A stricken Allied bomber-German ace sent to shoot it down+truly-inspiring story of wartime chivalry
Daily Mail ^ | July 19, 2013

Posted on 07/20/2013 4:16:58 AM PDT by nuconvert

*Luftwaffe pilot Lt Franz Stigler refused to shoot down near-destroyed Allied bomber

*Instead he guided stricken pilot Lt Charlie Brown to safety

*A phone call led to a tearful reunion of the two World War II veterans

The lone Allied bomber was a sitting duck. Holed all over by flak and bullets and down to a single good engine, it struggled simply to stay in the air over Germany, let alone make it the 300 miles back to England.

>>Somehow the pilot, 20-year-old Lt Charlie Brown, still clung to the controls — and the last vestiges of hope.<<

Wasn’t Snoopy supposed to be the one who tangles with the Red Baron, not Charlie Brown?

Great story...has always - found in a British paper...the US news is too busy running lies and race bait for the POTUS to take the time to share something like this...

Actually, the book was published last year already in the US. It is available on Amazon in paper or Kindle format, the later for only $3.99.

There are more stories like this around, but some will never get published, because the players are dying out. Many people never quite get a chance to write out their life experiences. The younger generations are generally not interested until it is too late.

I know the men I served with - and I remember the ones that lost their lives in Iraq (17) - some stories are personal and I remember them...maybe I’ll write them one day with the photo’s I took...but with the state of mind that kids have today - most don’t have nor will have any desire to read about a war in some far flung desert hole that we called Central South...

British papers are famous for recycling news they cull from other sources, usually long after an event happens.

CNN, USA Today, Denver Post, NY Post, NPR, et al.

Wonderful story - thanks for posting.

The final lines were especially intriguing - Tom Stoppard is (IMHO) the premier contemporary playwright in the English language, a master of clever dialogue, among other things. I’m really curious to see what he’ll do with this story - it seems so different than the sort of stuff he usually does (how do you do witty dialogue with a fighter pilot alone in his cockpit or in bomber full of shot-up, desperate airmen?)

You lost 17 troops in MND-CS? Were you in the 3rd AD?

“but with the state of mind that kids have today - most don’t have nor will have any desire to read about a war in some far flung desert hole that we called Central South...”

I loved to read the World War II novels in the public library when I was in Jr. High School. Unfortunately they have been discarded for ‘more timely’ books.

It’s time to bring back the books about real heros and reclaim history.

no - I was the ops chief for the US REO - I knew them - some where my team mates - others were Army assigned there or I had met with during security meetings - or with other PSD companies...but at one time or another - I joked with them - drank coffee with them - ate breakfast...the normal day...then most were killed by IED’s - an entire little bird was shot down - that had 2 of my mates on board (G-man and Rooster)...the last one - before I left was Iraqi General Qais - I watched the aftermath from him being assassinated outside the REO - he was on his way in for a security meeting...then I watched his 2nd in command (Abbas) clean house for a week...didn’t have many problems after that...

The Daily Mail is one of the best newspapers in the world. They cover in depth the stories that American Newspapers refuse to print. If you want to know what is really going on in America, you have to go across the pond and read it in the Daily Mail.
