Rand Paul to Mike Enzi: ‘I’ll do anything I can’ (To help defeat Liz Cheney)
POLITICO ^ | 07/18/2013 | Hadas Gold

Rand Paul is formally endorsing Sen. Mike Enzi as he faces Liz Cheney in a Wyoming GOP primary next year, Paul told POLITICO in an interview Wednesday.

“I’ve told him I’ll do anything I can to help him,” the Kentucky GOP senator said. “In fact, somebody asked me today if they could use my name, and I said I’d be happy to sign on and do a fundraiser for him.”

Paul said he isn’t sure why Cheney decided to challenge Enzi, but said she might end up picking up some grudges for doing so.

“I don’t think it probably will be helpful in the long run. I’m pretty sure Senator Enzi will be able to hold off against any primary challenge,” Paul said. “In doing so there will be some people that won’t be so happy with the primary challenge, that might bear grudges.” Cheney, 46, is the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney and launched her campaign Tuesday with a video calling for a “new generation of leaders to step up to the plate.”

Although she has deep pockets, her lack of deep roots in the state might hurt her. Cheney spent time in Wyoming as a child, but hasn’t spent much time there since. She moved her family from Virginia to Jackson Hole last year.

Paul said it will be difficult for “someone new” to the state to create the same type of deep personal relationship Enzi has.

“Mike Enzi has probably been to every town in Wyoming.

He’s the kind of guy who spends the time to get to know people in a town of 600 people, he’s been there,” Paul said.

I like her, but Liz made a terrible decision. Her defeat will end whatever political career she dreamed of.

She is not the embodiment of the “new blood” she speaks of.

Best she withdraw before she incurs too much damage.

Both of them have their flaws. Enzi is trying to tax the internet and is a “go along to get along” career politician. Cheney supports gay marriage and I suspect is a neocon. A state as red as Wyoming can do better than either of them.

The bigger question (for Me) is WHY is Paul sticking his nose in the matter anyway?

Payback. Dick Cheney endorsed Paul's primary opponent.

People in Kentucky responded by saying "on purpose?"

:D

I was born in Wyoming and have traveled the state extensively. I would be surprised if there are more than about 50 or 60 towns with more than 600 people. It takes longer to drive between most of them than to hold an event there.

As I've said on other threads, I'd trust the voters of Wyoming more to elect U.S. Senators (or a president) more than I would 90% of the rest of the country.

I should know how to spell Karl Rove’s name and should kick myself when I get it wrong. Thanks.

Liz moved to WY last fall.

What? She needed her daddy’s name to have a chance at running for the Senate?

Voting because of name recognition tells us a lot about voters in the United States...

All I know is that the mainstream GOP sites are supporting Enzi and already attacking Cheney.

I believe the Paul angst is in relation to Cheney being a strong national security conservative.

Liz Cheney backs same-sex marriage. Mike Enzi supports internet sales taxes. Your choice.

Good example of why Cheney isn't Wyoming's savior. Enzi's no prize, but it should be clear to FReepers by now that the Cheneys are no friends of small government.

If Liz had any guts, she would run against the Democrat Senators in VA, which is where she actually lives, rather than trying to unseat a solid conservative in a state where she only vacations.

**********************

I completely agree, although I thought I had read that she had established residency in Wyoming, I'm guessing for the purpose of running against Enzi. Still, I don't like it. Imho, it seems manipulative and underhanded.
