Rand Paul to Mike Enzi: ‘I’ll do anything I can’ (To help defeat Liz Cheney)
POLITICO ^ | 07/18/2013 | Hadas Gold

Rand Paul is formally endorsing Sen. Mike Enzi as he faces Liz Cheney in a Wyoming GOP primary next year, Paul told POLITICO in an interview Wednesday.

“I’ve told him I’ll do anything I can to help him,” the Kentucky GOP senator said. “In fact, somebody asked me today if they could use my name, and I said I’d be happy to sign on and do a fundraiser for him.”

Paul said he isn’t sure why Cheney decided to challenge Enzi, but said she might end up picking up some grudges for doing so.

“I don’t think it probably will be helpful in the long run. I’m pretty sure Senator Enzi will be able to hold off against any primary challenge,” Paul said. “In doing so there will be some people that won’t be so happy with the primary challenge, that might bear grudges.” Cheney, 46, is the daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney and launched her campaign Tuesday with a video calling for a “new generation of leaders to step up to the plate.”

Although she has deep pockets, her lack of deep roots in the state might hurt her. Cheney spent time in Wyoming as a child, but hasn’t spent much time there since. She moved her family from Virginia to Jackson Hole last year.

Paul said it will be difficult for “someone new” to the state to create the same type of deep personal relationship Enzi has.

“Mike Enzi has probably been to every town in Wyoming.

He’s the kind of guy who spends the time to get to know people in a town of 600 people, he’s been there,” Paul said.

RE: Liz Cheney is in the same catagory as Carl Rove.

That’s spelled “Karl” as in Karl Marx :)

Not really. He’s not as conservative as some of the recent Tea Party elected to Congress, but Enzi is pretty solid where it counts. He does retail politics in WY, and I’ve seen the guy speak.

Cheney is clearly not the choice here. The biggest tip-off is that she decided to plump her little rump down in Jackson, WY. Anyone who runs for office in this state (Wyoming, where I live) who is located in Jackson, has to overcome the state-wide perception that people from Jackson are wealthy, well-connected, self-important jerks. The reason why people in the rest of the state have that perception is because (drum roll please) it’s largely true.

I already know how I will be voting on this issue, and it won’t be for Cheney.

Paul seems to have some kind of bad feelings toward Cheney. Perhaps it’s no more than that he’s a friend of Enzi.

Anyone know anything about this?

Lots of debate here for and against Enzi and Cheney.

The bigger question (for Me) is WHY is Paul sticking his nose in the matter anyway?

Who does he think he is? A kingmaker?

Paul has his own problems to deal with. IF (Big IF) Paul wants to be taken seriously as a 2012 prez wanna-be, then he has a lot to do.

A couple of things stand out. Enzi supported Paul’s filibuster. I don’t even remember what the filibuster was about. The other reason that Paul would not like Liz Cheney is foreign policy. They are about as far apart as possible on foreign policy and that is often seen as Paul’s weakness with the Republican base.

Thank you for that. I was under the mistaken impression he was a RINO.

Liz only has good positions on foreign policy issues, IIRC.

Not enough to recommend her for the Senate.

RE: I don’t even remember what the filibuster was about.

On March 6–7, 2013, Paul engaged in a talking filibuster to block voting on the nomination of John O. Brennan as the Director of the CIA, questioning Barack Obama and his administration’s use of drones, and the stated legal justification for hypothetical lethal use within the United States.

Paul held the floor for 12 hours and 52 minutes, at times ceding to several other Republican senators as well as one Democratic senator, Ron Wyden, who joined in questioning the use of drones and related topics.

Paul noted the purpose of the filibuster was mostly regarding drone policy, particularly usage on noncombatants on U.S. soil. He argued that the language administration officials had used when questioned over that potential usage of drones was unclear, and could potentially lead to a slippery slope where citizens could be targeted merely for expressing views different from those of the president. He asked the Obama administration to agree that they would not target noncombatants on U.S. soil.

Eric Holder stated in a formal reply that the President DOES NOT HAVE the authority to use weaponized drones within the U.S. to kill, without due process, Americans not engaged in combat. Paul said that he was “quite happy” with the response.

THAT ended the Filibuster.

Why can’t she run against an incumbent Rat?

She’s blown it, big time.

RE: frustrating that cheney is promoting homo-ness.

Because of her sister.

Same thing with Rob Portman, who is now FOR gay marriage because he found out his son is gay.

Better than most of them, by far. Why is she not taking on a Democrat somewhere?

Rand Paul coming out against Cheney isn’t surprising and I doubt that she expected his support. But if Sarah Palin or Ted Cruz refuse to back her or come out for Enzi then I think her already slim chances fade considerably. And in all the races she’s supported has Palin ever taken sides against a GOP incumbent in a primary? Will Cruz do it? I highly doubt that they will. Cheney may get the Karl Roves of the party, but she may find her support isn’t as broad as she thinks it is.

“Why is she not taking on a Democrat somewhere?”

Because she thinks her daddy’s name still has some pull in his old home state.

Serious entitlement issues. We’ve had more than enough nepotism, thank you very much.

I would trade both of my Senators (Alexander and Corker) for Enzi. He’s not exactly a whacko-bird, but he will back them up far more often than not.
