Vatican: Get time off in purgatory by following Pope on Twitter
CBS ^ | 7/18/13

Posted on 07/18/2013 5:57:50 AM PDT by SoFloFreeper

The Vatican is taking a modern approach to one of its oldest traditions, by offering indulgences to Twitter followers of the Pontifex's social media account.

Aware that some Catholics may not be able afford to travel to Brazil, where World Youth Day is being held from July 23-28, and perhaps also in an effort to modernize himself, Pope Francis is making this first-time offer to the faithful who follow the events in Rio de Janeiro online.

Under Catholic belief, after confessing and being absolved of sin, the indulgences granted reduce the amount of time one spends in purgatory....

Most of what Francis has done has made a good impression on me. This move, not so much.

Consider the source ...and HOW it may be reporting this.

Somebody may have been pranked. The Catholic Church recently declared that there is no such thing as Purgatory.

WHAT?? They aren’t lying about it. It’s all over the net if you just do a search.

Indulgences are equal to the duration of penance; they were never equated with time in purgatory. This is an anti-catholic lie.

The world just gets crazier all the time. We have a ranch in SE oklahoma. Really pretty. We’ve rented it to some people down there who run cattle etc. You can’t even get cell phone service there, it is so far “off the grid”. I’m becoming more convinced all the time that we should just drop of the edge of the world and move down there.

I thought the Catholic Church no longer taught Purgatory as an article of faith?

CBS reporting on the Pope. They treat the Pope worse than they treat conservatives and for the same reason

I read the article. They quote one person.

One.

And no one from the vatican

From an american liberal institution that calls itself Catholic.

The point is about making a pilgrimage and offering the effort as a prayer. The subject matter here is handled very irreverently

I expect the many anti catholic freepers to pile on joining forces with CBS

But this is about getting kids who cant afford the trip to attend reverently via the internet

I hear you on that!!! I wish I could go off the grid.

So we have Catholics claiming this must be a prank, a lie, etc because they don’t believe this would happen.

BUT all they have to do is a quick little search to show that it did

Well fine, but don’t expect me to retweet anything unless his holiness has a cool Twitter handle

ROFL

Sure, YOU would be the one that would claim your Pope would never do such a thing

Guess again

Shame on CBS. With a bit more “research” explanation can be found here at the Vatican’s official website, and it has nothing to do with Purgatory. See:http://www.news.va/en/news/pope-francis-grants-indulgences-for-world-youth-da

KNOWING that CBS has no real fondness for the Catholic Church...don’t you think they may relish stirring the pot with regard to religious differences between Catholics and non-Catholics....and/or attempt to present the Church as archaic in some way?

If so, they are already stimulating the desired reactions.

I am not asking you WHY they reported on it..However, it IS news.

I am asking WHAT is wrong in their story.

For non-Catholics - a rather simplistic version is that an indulgence gives a time off for good behavior in Purgatory

Is this not true?
