Fifty years ago, it was the Summer of Profumo in London, commencing with a ministerial resignation that brought down a Conservative Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, and eventually his successor, Lord Home, too. Half-a-century on, it remains Britain's most famous sex scandal, and sufficiently potent that later this year Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black and Christopher Hampton will unveil their West End musical on the subject. I was in High School when the Keeler/Profumo affair came to a conclusion. NOT knowing what we all came to know about what was going on with JFK in our own White House in the exact same time frame, it’s no wonder our press was all over the Brit story. “Couldn’t happen here, now could it?”
And btw, considering the details of the other stories Steyn touches on, it seems the Brits have it all over us in perversion.
I think there were plenty of people who knew what Kennedy was like. In the 1960s, my grandparents were friends with a prominent and well-connected Catholic priest in Oldham (North West England) who intimated that there things about the Kennedys that would come out in future that they wouldn’t believe. (Makes you wonder what stuff comes out when Catholic clergy talk about amongst themselves)...
There’s plenty of money to be made as a “high-class” hooker if your main asset is having those kinds of looks. Takes more than having ‘radiant beauty’ to be a rocket scientist or a lawyer though...
