DHS warns employees not to read leaked NSA information
Washington Post ^ | July 15, 2013 | By Josh Hicks

The Department of Homeland Security has warned its employees that the government may penalize them for opening a Washington Post article containing a classified slide that shows how the National Security Agency eavesdrops on international communications.

An internal memo from DHS headquarters told workers on Friday that viewing the document from an “unclassified government workstation” could lead to administrative or legal action. “You may be violating your non-disclosure agreement in which you sign that you will protect classified national security information,” the communication said.

The memo said workers who view the article through an unclassified workstation should report the incident as a “classified data spillage.”

The NSA is a Defense Department agency, meaning it does not fall under the jurisdiction of Homeland Security. It was not immediately clear whether all federal agencies released similar warnings to their employees. . .

Did armed DHS agents run out and follow all the newspaper delivery trucks to pick up all the hard copies too?

The reasons that you describe are inherently illogical and, if anything, perpetuate an illusion of security. In computer security, if something COULD have been accessed, it MUST be assumed that it HAS ALREADY been accessed, and therefore, no longer secure.

DSS sent out emails to contractors saying individuals carrying clearances were not allowed to access classified information from contractor’s equipment that were posted on news site such as the Guardian. We have been told that wikileaks was off limits on work or home computers.

If you carry a clearance you not allowed to access classified information if you do not have a need to know.

I suspect it has to do with hypertext links to malicious sites.

Actually all 14 intelligence agencies now fall under DHS, as does the National Guard, FEMA, Coast Guard, Secret Service, TSA, Civil Air Patrol, and parts of the DoD.

Obama's Theater of the Absurd.

It is theater of the absurd...but this is nothing new. The government has this ridiculous tactic any time classified documents are leaked to the media and then published by the media.

The thought was, "just because something was leaked to the media doesn't mean that it was automatically declassified." I remember this warning being given to us all the way back to Desert Storm...just because something classified was stated on NBC News didn't mean that it became declassified.

Sorry.
