Gunman Kills One In Shooting At Family Dollar In Tampa
The Tampa Tribune ^ | July, 14, 2013 | Staff

An armed man dressed in black fatally shot one of the managers at the Family Dollar store at 4900 North 40th St. on Sunday morning during a robbery, according to Tampa police.

About 9 a.m., the gunman demanded money from an employee behind the counter, when Horsley Shorter Jr. ran out of the store's office to help his co-worker and was shot, police said.

The gunman then took the other employee outside to the victim's vehicle and ordered them into the trunk, police said. The employee pleaded with the gunman, who eventually left the other worker, shut the trunk and fled in the car, according to police.

Shorter, 49, of 3035 38th St., Tampa, and a retired 26-year Army veteran, was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he died.

Police are looking for a white, four-door 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage. The car has a Florida tag: AMZN75. The car also has a sticker reading "save the ta tas" on the trunk.

The suspect is a thin black male in his 20s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a black beanie, long-sleeve thermal shirt, long shorts, dark blue boxers and low white socks, police said.

Police warn residents who encounter the vehicle not to touch it and call 911 or (813) 231-6130.

Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay has offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest of the shooter. Tipsters can call (800) 873-TIPS (8477), visit www.crimestopperstb.com, text CSTB plus the tip information to 274637 or use the free app Tipsubmit.

Another Black On Black Killing

If Obama Had a son he would look like this:

This victim is the second store employee killed in less than a week in the Tampa area.

The morning of July10 a 7-11 clerk was stabbed to death at the 7-11 stoer in Riverview.
After a daylong search, police arrested Lawrence Bongiovanni, 20, of Tampa, charging him with 1st degree murder.

Authorities say he stole a stack of scratch-off lottery tickets after killing the clerk and cashed in the winners as he fled south, leading to his capture.

Family Dollar tends to pick store locations that cause you to wonder whey there aren’t shootings in more than half of them.

FYI:

I've noticed that as well.

It might actually be their business plan - to locate in areas where there is a need for more stores but low competition
(for obvious reasons).

It does make one wonder...

Hell no. You’re going to have to shoot me right there in the parking lot before I get in your trunk.

Family Dollar does provide some desperately needed jobs in really bad Pittsburgh neighborhoods. But I feel for the people working there, who are quite likely to encounter a gun in the face.

“The suspect is a thin black male in his 20s”

So typical. And yet, the black community wonders why there is racial profiling.

I am perennially baffled that store owner/operators don’t think they have to allow employees to protect themselves. If they don’t value their own chinese merchandise that’s one thing but it’s disgusting that they leave employees bare handed. Why should your basic dumbass hold-up guy think it’s safe to hold up a store? I always told my own employees to shoot first if they were threatened-—we’d clean up the paper work later.

Good point.

It's akin to a school hanging a "Gun Free Zone" sign on the door.

I have a suspicion that the backroom bean counters are more concerned with insurance considerations.

I am generally angry and sad when I see a young woman working those stores late at night....no one should have to place themselves in such danger...

Tampa, in July, wears "a black beanie, long-sleeve thermal shirt, long shorts, dark blue boxers", i.e. his underwear's hanging out in the back -- and no mask. There should be an extra five years for stupidity right in the law. Not that this POS should get anything but the death penalty, but y'know...

Family Dollar stores have a wide variety of goods, including some home decor, and locate in underserved areaas, adjusting their inventory to fill underserved niches. The thing that strikes me (figuratively) is, when I go to the locations in the ‘hood (what passes for the ‘hood here in Grand Rapids), the staff is always so darned glad to see me. I’ve only been panhandled once, which is kind of amazing.

It’s a poor people’s store, both patronized by and employing folks who are just getting by (interspersed with a few bargain hunters who go there to buy cheap party supplies,,etc,). So it’s located in marginal areas, but most of its customers are just fine, simply poor. It’s horrible that thuggish creeps would target the equally poor but hardworking employees of this store.
