(IL) General Assembly overrides governor's veto of concealed carry bill

Illinois today became the last state in the country to legalize the concealed carry of guns after both the House and Senate rejected Gov. Pat Quinn’s attempt to rewrite the compromise bill.

Senators voted 41-17 to override Quinn’s amendatory veto of the bill. Earlier in the day, the House voted 77-31 to overturn the governor’s rewrite. The measure now becomes law, though the actual ability of gun owners to carry a concealed firearm remains months away.

The action by the Democratic General Assembly was a major repudiation of the actions of the state’s Democratic governor. Supporters of the compromise legislation accused Quinn of engaging in re-election politics rather than negotiating with lawmakers when the bill was crafted.

On a bright July day, some light even penetrates the Illinois Statehouse...(and unless you're Pat Quinn, you know where that is!)

So they legalised a small part of what the Second Amendment of the Constitution guarantees as the right of every legal citizen. It’s a start, I suppose. It makes me fume that these liars think they’ve done too much when they “grant” us part of our Constitutional rights.

Maryland may have a concealed Carry law, but just try to get a permit.

There aint any to be had.

It’s a joke.

Apply to the State Police and wait.————forever -—or get turned down. Either way your chances of getting hit by lightning are a lot better.

Isn’t there a lawsuit trying to change that to true “shall issue”?

You are correct.

For all intents and purposes, Maryland bans concealed carry.

We won a case in court to have concealed carry, but the Attorney General appealed, don’t know what ever happened to it, but I do know its near impossible unless you are a retired Police officer to get concealed carry.,

I know.

My brother, who is neither an ex-cop nor a celebrity, lives in Maryland. He’s pretty much given up on trying to wrest a permit from them.

“I think he needs to learn how to count,” state Sen. Mike Jacobs, D-East Moline, said of Quinn. “Anyone who doesn’t understand that we’re going to run this bill over his objections doesn’t understand government.”

Congratulations Illinois!

It’s the Woolard v Sheridan case, I believe. Current status is that the 4th Circuit has left in place MDs requirement that a concealed carry licensee have some specific, concrete reason, other than general self defense, for getting the license. That is a classic “may issue” formulation. I don’t know if cert has been filed for SCOTUS, but it clearly merits SCOTUS review, because the net effect is a de facto ban on a constitutional right, per the 7th Circuit under Posner. And I would think sooner would be better than later, given the desirability of having the Heller court still there when “may issue” finally comes up.

If and when they ever start issuing , there will be a rush like you wouldn’t believe.

Right now concealed carry is a joke.

Self Defense is the main reason for any concealed carry.
I don’t have any money to protect, and I don’t intend to make arrests. Defense for myself and family should be all that is needed.

Now that every state has at least some form of concealed carry, our battle, or war, switches to keeping our gains on concealed carry in each state, as well as to fixing laws in states like Maryland, which are concealed carry in letter but not in spirit.

I have problems with the bill, but is far better to have override Quinnochio than had his amendatory veto sustained. Would not have been allowed to carry more than 10 rounds, 1 gun and many places would have been off limits. Was at the statehouse after the house vote and before the senate vote. 2nd Amendment rights somewhat restored after 40+ years of denial in Illinois.

The IL Dems will likely file an emergency brief with the New Jersey Supreme Court, and the “Court” will put a Stay in place against the Veto override. It’ll be even more outrageous and comical than back in 2002 when they filled the NJ Senatorial Ballot! lol

.....Wouldn’t surprise me at all.... Well, maybe just a little.

Congratulations Illinois!

Yup! I listen to WLS daily at work and heard Quinn making despondent sound bites today. I'm sure he would have been more despondent if he wasn't surrounded by bodyguards with guns. What's worse is Quinn probably doesn't realize the irony.
