Marcella, this whole thing with “smart meters” has to do with UN Agenda 21. The aim of those is to enable the power companies/govt to be able to control the citizens’ power usage.
This is very insidious and is only a very small, but significant outrage being fostered by the UN et al. They are seeking to put into place their program by ignorant acceptance at the grass roots level.

SMART METERS – These are being installed in some Oklahoma communities. These meters are capable of SHUTTING OFF your power. Appliances have been developed that will talk to the meter and will shut you down if it decides you are using too much electricity. They are laying the infrastructure. Guess what they will be requiring us to do in the future? That’s right...buy those appliances. Some who were at the meeting urged that if they try to put you on a smart meter, GET LEGAL ADVICE, hire an electrician, and tell the electricity company to come and get their meter.

Yes, I read a thread on that. Fridges are the first appliances to have that “something extra” in them that a utility company can use to turn down the power a fridge can get. The book/movie, 1984, is coming true.
I bought my fridge in 2003 and keep a repair policy on it so it doesn't cost me a fortune if it needs to be repaired. I don't want a new fridge.

What do you think of having a separate well where the user can retrieve water the old way with a hand pump?
Right now my electric pump brings water up from 230 feet. Would that be too far for a hand pump to retrieve water from?
I remember my grandparents had one of those hand pump wells. They lived in Gallatin Gateway, Montana which is right outside the Gallatin Canyon that heads to Lone Mountain and West Yellowstone.
However, their well was barely 30 feet deep.

I currently have a 200 gallon holding tank for my water that the pump fills once the pressure drops to 35 psi.
I have considered a solar power setup for the pump, but have never really looked into it.
For those who already have a well operated with an electric pump, they do make a rather inexpensive bucket that is long and narrow that you can use to manually bring up water from your well.
Hubby tells me he can rewire the pump to use with the generator or maybe some solar device, but then he won’t do it until after the emergency, because we’ve always been ok in past outages with our emergency supplies (sigh). I figure that bucket will save my peace of mind until then.
Cisterns are pretty expensive to put in, but they are great. When I was a kid, many of the old houses in the country, had cisterns. They were great for laundry etc. They weren’t considered potable, but with the filters that preppers have that wouldnt’ be a problem.
I was doing some research on it. So far no so good - Solar setup to be able to flip a switch and change between electric to solar was way more expensive than I could afford.
