Spitzer Rejoins Politics, Asking for Forgiveness
New York Times ^ | MICHAEL BARBARO and DAVID W. CHEN

Posted on 07/07/2013 8:07:40 PM PDT by lbryce

Eliot Spitzer, who resigned as governor of New York five years ago amid a prostitution scandal, is re-entering political life, with a run for the citywide office of comptroller and a hope that voters are ready to look past his previous misconduct.

Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer, hoping that voters have forgiven him his previous misconduct, will run for the citywide office of comptroller.

In an interview, Mr. Spitzer, 54, sounding restless after an unwelcome hiatus from government, said he had re-envisioned the often-overlooked office and wanted to resurrect the kind of aggressive role he played as New York State’s attorney general. He said that he had consulted with his family and taken the temperature of the city’s ever-candid electorate, and that he believed New Yorkers would be open to his candidacy.

“I’m hopeful there will be forgiveness, I am asking for it,” he said in the telephone interview on Sunday night.

I read somewhere only recently that he was having problems with his marriage. He's not your garden-variety politician looking for redemption for some forgivable transgression. It's not like it was greed or megalomania that did him in, something people can identify with much more readily than the obsessive-compulsiveness/sexual fetish disorder he manifested to extreme. I am very curious to see how the voters respond to his re-entry into politics. Criminality by government officials is easier tolerated than what seems to be, has been a psychiatric condition.

Does the public have the right to inquire as to his current mental state, whether or not that he's sought therapy for his problems, what assurance he has to offer that he won't indulge in the same lascivious behavior in seeking to regain the public's trust?

With no standards, no God, forgiveness doesn’t get easier; it becomes a meaningless term.

Hey, if that scumbag Weiner can suddenly lead the mayoral race polling, why can’t Spitzer give it a whirl?

Suffice it to say that neither man is a Republican; those guys tend to be held accountable for their sex scandals.

They are just plain addicted to the wine and dine on the taxpayers dime. Weiner, Spitzer, Clinton (both), just won’t stay away from the public. Spitzer is still a sex addict and should not be trusted.

Before we're finished, it will be a requirement to have had some legal or ethical lapse to run for office! Anthony Weiner's back, and doing well in the polls too, from what I gather! Well, that was quick!

There are too many politicians with no character, this is one of them. America needs men of integrity and honor now more than ever. He should step aside and get another job, perhaps car mechanic.

Sad to say, but we have become a nation without shame. Not only these men of low repute but the voters who “forgive and forget”.

the thing that’s kind of funny when a liberal asks forgiveness, it doesn’t work both ways.

just a couple of weeks ago, I think it was discovery channel, an all new documentary on Watergate.

and in the camera, the face of carl Bernstein “something was rotten”.
you think carl said the same thing about the umpteenth scandal of the Obama administration?

Even if you set aside the whoring and the hypocrisy— Spitzer was a bully and a creep.

Weiner’s main opponent for mayor is expected to be Christine Quinn, a city councilwoman, if I recall correctly. She is said to be very liberal, and wants to expand upon Bloomberg nanny state impulses. For example, she wants to ban advertising by fast food places for happy meals and such.

New Yorkers may not have much of a choice in the mayor’s election.

What’s really needed, for these and other offices, are good quality candidates, preferably conservative for their areas, who can easily defeat candidates such as Weiner and Spitzer. Weiner and Spitzer running for office again should be a joke. Instead, they are serious candidates.

Has America become so liberal that disgraced politicians are not really disgraced, that they will just lie low for a few years, then get elected to office again?????

“I’m hopeful there will be forgiveness, I am asking for it.”

Are people this stupid?

Yes they are!

We are not getting out of this deal without the unthinkable.

Spitzer is still a sex addict and should not be trusted.

The bogus term "sex addict" is a very lame attemtp at "justification" for what is simply bad behavior which is CHOSEN by the one behaving badly.

It holds no water against the truth, and you're right--he is not to be trusted, because he is just a bad guy.

Exactly! Even mass murderers generate sympathy if they just say they’re sorry. It’s completely meaningless, as if the current free pass for dereliction of duty - I take full responsibility. That’s it; no action, no resignation, just say you take responsibility and then don’t. It’s disgusting.

Reminds me of the Monty Python sketch about the apologetic criminal in court...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oeSFAIKaX4
