While most Americans rank the economy and government spending as the top challenges facing the nation, the Senate last month rushed through a comprehensive immigration bill to give amnesty to 11 million illegal aliens. The effort was more about the perceived needs of the Republican Party than the nation as a whole. The swift Senate action was intended to pressure the House to pass amnesty into law. The House seems to have other ideas.
Last Friday, before Congress left for a week-long recess, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor's office released to GOP House members a 3-page memo detailing issues that would be on the legislative calendar when Congress returned.
The memo discussed issues related to energy, education and government oversight. Immigration was only mentioned at the end, in a section headlined "a few additional items." This is not how a Chamber gears up for work on a complex legislative issue.
“The House may begin consideration of the border security measures that have been passed by the Homeland Security and Judiciary Committees and begin reviewing other immigration proposals,” Mr. Cantor wrote, noting that Republicans will hold an internal conference on the issue on July 10th.
Speaker Boehner has repeatedly said that the House won't consider the Senate bill. It's been working on several pieces of legislation that cover various aspects of our immigration system. This piecemeal approach provides greater deliberation and consideration than the 1,000+ bill approach embraced by the Senate. The public is still learning the details of the bill passed by 68 Senators last month.
The idea that Senate action would force the House's hand was always silly. The House doesn't simply act on the whims of Senators. Having to face voters every 2 years, the House is more sensitive to grass-roots sentiment than the Senate.

If the GOP in the house votes for this bill the official death of the Republican Party won’t be too long after it. Why are these people so scared and stupid of doing the right thing? Being Democrat-lite won’t get you any voters.

what’s wrong with this??? best thing the House could do is rip apart the Senate bill, showing what a fraud it is and comparing it to the disaster that is obamacare....if the Congress comes out with a dynamite border security plan they can stick it to obama and the rest of the demoKrats- never mind mclame and the GOPe....

You Don’ t understand the process. Any immigration bill the house passes goes to conference where the senate replaces it with their version and we are SCREWED!
The only way to kill the Senate version is to refuse to take up ANY immigration legislation.

Boehner and the Ruling Class Cats in the GOP are going to “craft” their own bill - then go to Reconciliation and come out with a slightly modified Senate bill, and they will claim what the lying sacks are already claiming; that they fought for ‘conservative measures’ in the bill.
It’s a shell game folks. They are all playing us for fools, the ENTIRETY of Washington.
Until we recognize the lot of them as enemies, we have no chance in hell to preserve what liberties we have left.
They will abolish and eradicate those, along with the very people who hold onto them.
The best thing the House could do is consider no immigration bill at all. Any bill passed would have to be conferenced with the Senate bill and given the known Republican tendency to grovel at the feet of Democrats, we'd lose not only border security, but the country as well.
House Republicans are absolute MORONS if they pass this bill..The Senate doing it didnt surprise me since they are mostly full of RINO trash, but House Republicans..we cant rely on them either??
In my opinion the wrongness lies in my belief that immigration reform is not needed, but rather existing laws need to be enforced.
If the House passes an immigration reform bill, even loaded with border security provisions, all bets are off when the House and Senate take up the two bills in conference committee. Case in point, ObamaCare. Another factor, Amnesty proponents only need 18 GOP members to join with the Rats to pass something similar to the Senate bill. No House action at all is the only sure way to kill Amnesty.
It offends me to no end these politicians enact major changes for American society, without a single public hearing.
IF there were hearings we could have reaction, and people would be able to expose all the crazy extra provisions which are hidden under the simplistic name of the bill.
Why not hold hearings and a national debate on these subjects? These politicians are just awful leaders.

I have long wondered the same thing. It is not like smart people have never tried to tell them about terrible bills, like amnesty, yet they continue to do the wrong thing. I am just cynical enough, to think maybe they are simply RINOs, or worse, closet democrats in disguise.

The one that all true Conservatives should run to from the GOP. What it will be I don’t know. I just have a gut feeling that we will need one.
