The World Health Organization is forming an emergency committee of international experts to prepare for a possible worsening of the Middle East coronavirus (MERS), which has killed 40 people, WHO flu expert Keiji Fukuda said on Friday.
Most of the cases of MERS so far have been in Saudi Arabia, which hosts millions of Muslim visitors every year for the annual haj pilgrimage.
"We want to make sure we can move as quickly as possible if we need to," Fukuda told a news conference.

Same general area where the Plague that ravaged Europe in the 1500 and 1600s started.
Uh oh!
Let the Hadj start, and then quarentine them all.
Just like they did in 2007 for the bird flu pandemic?
What a flipping joke.
I flew into Mexico on May 1st that year and the country was shut down. No museums or anything else run by the government was open.
Went to McDonalds for breakfast and not one person showed up while we ate.
Drove up to Cancun and didn’t see 10. White people for the several hours we were there.
The Galleria was a ghost town and it was weird. Like being in one of those “Day the Earth Stood Still” Movies.
Found only one restaurant open.
It was Oaxachan. They served some of the most amazing mole’s.
But, best part? I got to do my Bear Grylls impersonation.
They had grasshoppers for appetizers..
Two scotch’s and beginning a 3rd later I ate the bowl.
Anyway, we had Tamiflu, in case anyone got so much as a sniffle.
I informed the holder of the Tamiflu I’d take my chances.
Spent two weeks there.
Hired the kid that drives us around to stuff we don’t k ow how to get to. Found a wildlife park with a zip line, that was 1.5 miles long.
I rode it with no waiting and had a great time. Even cut my leg pretty badly when I did a summersault. Washed it off with two bottles of water, dropped a small bottle of alcohol on it, let dry as best I could(it’s the frickin Mayan River in May. Sweltering) and then sprayed New Skin all over it.
Even went to Xcaret and no lines. Food sucked. Dog as in inedible. Just so totally not worth the money.
Grocery store was even empty.
These pandemics are BS with the drug companies doing their part to push some goo on unsuspecting victims.
In fact, many of the WHO scientists are heavily influenced by the drug companies.
If it actually happens, I’ll hole up at home.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Looking at promed mushrooming, this is on rails to follow exactly the movie scenario “Contagion” - movie out of Abu Dhabi.
The saudis probably bought some sars samples to start from.
Also an area of the world with atrocious vitamin d3 levels. Most Saudi inhabitants are woefully deficient in d3.
The film CONTAGION does a tremendous job of story telling and accurately portraying what this virus, or something like it could do if not contained, along with what is involved in fighting an exponentially expanding pandemic. It is well acted and worth watching just for insight and preparation sake alone.
A crisis to not let go to waste!!!
Happy days are here again!!!
Mecca is located in Saudi Arabia. Every year hundreds of millions of people go there and stand in line to kiss the Black Stone Of Kaaba, a rock that fell out of the sky thousands of years ago. Often they have stampedes at that site that kill thousands, because Muslims are desperate to get to that rock. And all of those devout kisses on the Black Stone Of Kaaba have to be spreading pathogens that cause disease. You know they are.
I was reading about this on my favorite flu forum and then stopped weeks ago, other news is way too riveting. I guess I better start reading about this again. Of course, if this gets going, it may “solve” some other problems.
Yup.
What’s the deal with the Middle East and plagues?
Almost like Biblical, you know!!
