Rome (CNN) -- The Roman Catholic Church will declare the late Pope John Paul II a saint, the Vatican announced Friday.
Pope Francis signed the decree Friday morning, the Vatican said. John Paul was pope from 1978 until his death in 2005, and was in a way the first rock star pontiff, drawing vast crowds as he crisscrossed the globe.
At his funeral, thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square and chanted "Santo subito" -- Sainthood now! The Polish-born pope was fast-tracked to beatification and became "the blessed" John Paul II barely six years after his death, the fastest beatification in centuries.

Actually it is not a different discussion since the article goes on to state that John XXIII will also be canonized, (even though there are no reports of a second verifiable miracle). John XXIII was a nice man but the fruit of Vatican II was poisonous to the church. NO saint, no way
Knew this for the last few days. But then again knew this since Pope John Paul II had passed he was a saint.
With all those trips he made he should be the patron saint of frequent flyers, really Pope John Paul II earn those miles. :)
Tainted sainthood hardly. Even Billy Graham called John Paul II a saint. He, Reagan and Thatcher changed the world. Too bad it’s changed back.
Are you suggesting that all who were born, catechized, and practice Roman Catholicism since Vatican II are poisoned?
People like to make any number of claims about Vatican II, but what novel doctrine was proposed? What new dogma was proclaimed? Answer: none! The faith didn’t change!
Those who sought to disobey used Vatican II as cover. These dissenters have always been around, but were prepared to use any uncertainty to act up.
The faith didn’t change, but dissenters were able to get the upper hand, for a time. That has changed, and will continue to change.
Someone smarter than me summed up the current and last two Popes this way. JPII taught us what we believed. Benedict XVI taught us why we believe. Francis teaches us how to live out our believes.
It’s going to be hard for some people, getting to Heaven and finding the place is full of people they don’t think deserve to be there.
Actually, wouldn’t that make it Purgatory, not Heaven, since Heaven is perfect happiness? Maybe one of the necessary steps for entering Heaven is to understand that, during my life, I was totally dead wrong about a lot of things.
I can't think of single practicing Catholic alive who claims to have such power. Perhaps you should research the process of the declaration of sainthood and what is actually taking place before casting ignorant insults.

Repent for what? Commission of a sin? How do you know anyone committed a sin? Are you claiming to know what is in someone's soul? Perhaps a little inward soul searching would be a good idea before gazing outward and judging what is in the souls of others -- lest you be judged and all that.
My parish recently got the Latin Mass! Others are getting them too.
The problem is not getting the Latin Mass, it is getting lib Catholics to go along with it!
I had to laugh at your post. The majority of Catholics I personally know believe they went to .ell if old Martin Luther was the door greeter when they returned to the Maker. Most are expecting St. Peter.
I expect to see Jesus.

I’m not a Catholic and in any case don’t know the whys and wherefores of sainthood. I DO know a LOT about the Cold War, the conduct of it and the factors that led to the collapse of the Soviets and the Bloc, and in THIS respect I think it’s fair to say that John Paul II was a GIANT of a man. That’s why his photo is on my wall, right next to Reagan’s.

I also believe that JPII knew that the real clergy sex abuse was happening in places like the United States, and he didn't like the United States very much. He distrusted our economic system, he distrusted our freedom, and he didn't like the fact that we were as successful as we were. JPII was infected by the sort of sneering hubris common among European intellectuals.
Was he a saint? I have no idea. He was a great man. I object only to the fact that they "fast tracked" him like this. Time was needed to allow these themes to be developed more fully.
