Rome (CNN) -- The Roman Catholic Church will declare the late Pope John Paul II a saint, the Vatican announced Friday.

Pope Francis signed the decree Friday morning, the Vatican said. John Paul was pope from 1978 until his death in 2005, and was in a way the first rock star pontiff, drawing vast crowds as he crisscrossed the globe.

At his funeral, thousands of pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square and chanted "Santo subito" -- Sainthood now! The Polish-born pope was fast-tracked to beatification and became "the blessed" John Paul II barely six years after his death, the fastest beatification in centuries.

I think that would be, “Viva il Papa!” in Italian.

I’m so pleased about this, and also about Pope John XXIII. I’ve been chortling all day.

I have a medal given to my sister from JP II. It was blessed and touched to his tomb as well.

I propose a name for our new Saint:

"Saint Communism Killer the 1st"

But I suppose Saint John Paul will work in a pinch!

I think they should respect the tradition. I don’t think he would have asked for this to be done.

For what to be done?

Tainted sainthood.

He, as well as his predecessors, had the opportunity to please their savior by tossing out the evil fomented by Vatican II.

He, as well as they, didn’t.

John Paul is no saint as he found out when he faced his Maker.

A real Catholic knows that the only one to decide who gets into Heaven, Hell, or Purgatory is God. You think you have the power to decide what to do with a soul?

REPENT!

Something you saw on YouTube? Did God Himself give a first-hand accounting of this scene to you? What an unbelievably rude remark to leave on this thread.

Liberals hate Pope John Paul II for various reasons. Among those are reinforcing bans on birth control and not allowing women to be priests.

As I heard one liberal say, John Paul was sending the status of women in the church backwards to the Middle Ages.

Maybe we will see homosexual protesters at the mass to celebrate the sainthood of Popes John and John Paul. They are so proud of themselves flinging condoms around as they celebrate homosexuality and protest all who oppose their point of view.

Many of us have disagreements with Catholic theology ... but “evil fomented by Vatican II”? Sounds like your beef is not with this particular sainthood but with Vatican II and that is a whole separate discussion.

Probably the same libs that think the “Religion of Peace” is just fine and dandy and that the oppression/mutilation of women THEY do is “part of their RICH culture”..... BARF

I agree. I don’t particularly like JPII - he had almost 30 years to bring the Church out of destruction wrought by VII, and he really didn’t do much until he got so weak that Ratzinger could start cleaning things out behind the scenes. He appointed weak or even bad bishops and largely ignored the sexual abuse scandals until ver late.

I’ve always thought JPII was very media driven and just wanted to be liked.

HOWEVER, all that said, he was regarded as conservative by many people and his travels made a big impact. So who knows?

I wouldn’t cultivate a personal devotion to him myself, but the Church has clearly decided that the good outweighed the bad. That’s ok too.
